Hi all,

as I will be getting either an Intel skylake i5/i7 cpu and mobo, which CPU cooler would you recommend?

Need for overclocking.

I like those coolers with fancy LEDs like Sigmatek series.

Also, are water coolers as sexy looking as those fancy LED light air coolers?

Budget ranges from $49-$100.

Thanks.

water coolers (aio type) will give a better visual of the mobo. so if u got a sexy looking mobo, an aio is a good choice, for looks sake.

as yr budget is $100, only the single 120mm aio will fit. Led aio i can think of are Deepcool ones, Corsair H60. do note however, they give no significant advantage over good aircoolers.

I just discovered my palit is a 2.5 slot GPU card...it wont fit into a Thermaltek Core V1............

What are my other options for a windowed panel mini ITX case besides the expensive Phantek Evolve ITX?

I've been using my Sigmatek LED air cooler for the past 6 years and I like the LED fan spinning and the huge monstrous 4 pipe heatsink...

Not sure if I can get used to a water based cooler...

Which air coolers are LED fan spinning, good for moderate overclocking and cost between $40-$100? I called up cybermind northpoint and the guy has limited idea...

yes most itx cases at least the ones i have got vented side panels. Core V1 allows swapping panels but yr gpu won't be getting intake cool air, which will affect temps slightly.

as itx cases are small, u probably need to cover the side and top to prevent hearing coil whine. my suggestion is go for Core V1. It's only $70. place the window panel beside the gpu. if it works, then great. if not, try covering the top with something. if tats optimal, u can order another window panel from TT.

Building pc is a very personal thing. it's not always possible to assume one's results will be similar to another. so good to always experiment and find out which is best.

What are my other options for a windowed panel mini ITX case besides the expensive Phantek Evolve ITX? I'm also considering the micro ATX Thermaltake Core V21 but that would be venturing into Micro ATX territory..after 6 years of living with ATX, I would really like to go mini-ITX.

stop starting so many thread, ask in your "Need Advice on which motherboards to buy" will do, if not i think the mods will not be happy and you will either get a infraction or ban!!
lol, seems like all your thread got combine my mod already

for cooler can get the GTX H100i/H110i, depending on your casing and the size of fan you are going for

LOL I think I cork eye..for past 2 months I have been reading up on Nvidia GTX 970 Vs AMD R390..

So when I saw your GTX H100i...I thought when did the dam Nvidia start making CPU Coolers...LOL

The GTX name is making me sick...and I feel sick now that my Palit 2.5 slot GTX 970 can't fit into the Thermaltake Core V1..dam it..

The Corsair GTX H100i/H110i cost $185-$205 according to CyberMind price list..

My budget is $50-$100...any good recommendation on air coolers with LED light fans with good overclocking results?

No one states that G-Sync is better than FreeSync or vice versa. The fanboys of both sides are the ones trying to claim this. In fact, I would ask u the same question: is CUDA better or OpenCL better? U probably can't give me a satisfactory answer, the best u can muster is that CUDA is more efficient and OpenCL is a more open standard for compatibility. Same here for G-Sync vs Freesync. Wad is the tool used to measure which side is better? How reliable or unbiased is that tool? No one really knows, except that G-Sync and Freesync are technologies by 2 rival companies to introduce the same variable monitor refresh rate technology.

But for me, I'm skipping G-Sync/Freesync altogether coz I have no need for fast refresh rate. Video editing and rendering don't benefit from 144Hz refresh rate anyway, only gaming does.

I think this is wad a lot of other HWZers have been trying to tell u: do u even use hyperthreading? Under wad circumstances? If u even make use of hyperthreading, then i7 is the clear way to go, don't even bother about i5 at all. Even more so, get the Extreme versions of the i7 like the i7-5820k, i7-5930k or (if budget allows) the 8-core i7-5960X. People like me who actually use hyperthreading for CPU-intensive stuff like rendering appreciate wad hyperthreading does for us, so will skip mainstream i7 and just go to the high-end i7.

But if u don't use hyperthreading, then hyperthreading becomes another feature that becomes white elephant to ur daily usage. Games don't use hyperthreading coz they are designed to run on all 4 cores (unless the game developer is super hardworking). Other simple activities like office work and web browsing surely don't use 8 threads; sometimes the CPU will even down throttle to use only a single thread for such activities to save power. So buying an i5 to use all 4 cores vs buying an i7 to use 4 cores and incur the hyperthreading white elephant - the answer should be pretty obvious.

They did a test in which they invite a group of Nvidia fanboys and AMD fanboys and randomly assign them to G-Sync and Free-Sync setups. In the end, more chose the G-Sync setup as more fluid in gameplay (Freesync is still fluid, but less so comparatively speaking) even though they did not know whether they were playing on G or Free sync. Admittedly, this is a small sample. Perhaps they should have sampled 1,000 gamers and it would be clearer. But the logistics involved would be massive.

As this new rig I'm building is geared towards hardcore 16 hr a day gaming, I see youtube videos pointing towards higher fps for the i7. That's why I'm considering the i7.

Perhaps the Titan/980 GPU are affecting the scores? Even if yes, let's say 2 years down the road, I sell off my GTX 970 and get an AMD Polaris architecture card with HBM, then wouldn't the i7 be put to better use?

die die want first hand?
can try find for 2nd hand, sometimes there are good deals
All my system parts are upgraded one by one
I actually got a 2nd hand gt H100i for $80, still have warranty, one day i itchy backside go RMA, they tell me the model already eol so they replace the newer one for me.

Can try deepcool maelstrom 240, around $105 +- i think

I think u answered ur own question.

Gaming 16 hrs a day is the key. Though wad games I have yet to ask.

Get an i7 non-k version if u wish to stay on the i7 track. Overclocking does no benefit to u for gaming 16hr a day (waste electricity some more), so the cost savings can be put to other pc parts (or other non-pc parts if u wish to). Wanna improve fps performance, overclocking GPU will reap much more results than overclocking CPU in current games that are still GPU limited.

Currently the limiting factor is the monitor. Asus 1080p 144Hz does not require more than GTX 970 for majority of the games out there. So money can be saved here. Also, besides gaming, i doubt u will use the motherboard features, so a B150 or H170 motherboard that has the basic features to pull u through and enough eyecandy will do. Save the rest of the money for better PC cases, better PSU (for 16-hr-a-day usage), for better storage (I assume 16 hrs a day gaming involves several games, so get bigger SATA SSD storage). Can even pamper urself with LED lighting for aesthetics, or better quality case fans for better airflow.

In The Witcher and Grand Theft Auto,

An o/c i5-6600K matches the performance of a stock i7-6700K.

But when the i7-6700K is o/c, it is around 5-15 fps faster than an o/c i5-6600K in The Witcher and Grand Theft Auto. So for around $165 more, we get up to 15 fps faster in certain games (at the moment).

Sorry its getting late now and tomorrow I may go SLS to get my rig components. So kinda in a daze and cant read properly.

What do you mean by I just answered my question? As in the Titan/980 are affecting the scores so i7 scores not so relevant? Or you referring to 2 years down the road, i7 might help AMD Polaris / Nvidia Pascal cards and thus i7 potentially helpful based on above youtube?

I haven't grabbed my monitor yet. Considering Asus 144 hz as its lag is superior to the BenQ 144 Hz and Philips 144 Hz is selling close to same price as Asus but doesn't have 3D (wad the...)

Anything above GTX 970 for 1080p gaming is overkill (at the moment). I assume those with GTX 980/Ti or R390X are gunning for 2K resolutions.

I already bought GTX 970 earlier on before the CPU/mobo so not sure what you mean by money "can be saved" here...

If I run out of space in the next few weeks, I will get the Samsung EVO 500 GB, though I like the sandisk name more than Samsung as everyone is using Samsung these days and I really hate to be the typical Samsung or Apple user, you get what I mean...even my hp I using a Sony C5 Ultra with a 6" screen, got it for $98 from starhub recontract, an absolute steal...

If I don't need the storage, I will camp out for the next few months and gun for a M2 drive coming out soon from the other manufacturers.

Mini ITX build I'm going for Seasonic X-650 since I wont be crossfiring or SLing. I hope a good PS will shut the dam coil whine of Nvidia's GTX 970/980 up for good. My Cooler Master Silent Pro Gold 1000 watt nuclear reactor apparently couldn't do its job. But I highly suspect it could be due to the R22 inductors on the Palit itself as EVGA has come out with a new set of cards featuring new inductors.

CPU scores are not so relevant unless the game is CPU-intensive, which currently only very few games are. A non-K i7 will do. Yes, higher-clocked CPUs will improve fps scores, but not as much as overclocking GPU. Wad is 143fps vs 144fps by overclocking the CPU compared to 143fps vs 163fps by overclocking the GPU? GPUs will come and go in these few years, but only if u step up to a newer CPU architecture will u see the significant improvements in fps. Else, it's just 1-2fps improvements by getting an overclocked CPU.

As for coil whine, if u have it, u have it. Changing to better PSU doesn't eliminate it, might reduce it, but it will still be there. If by upgrading to better capacitors in PSU to supply 'cleaner' power to prevent GPU capacitors from squeaking, GTX 970 owners would be buying expensive PSU by the herds lo. Just live with it, most of the time it's because the fps is much higher than the monitor frequency (e.g. GPU outputting 240fps to a 144Hz monitor at a load screen of the game).

Mind you that firstly gpu bottlenecks are largely eliminated. If your gpu is weaker, the gains are minimised.

Should always look at averagr fps and don't think you listened to the commentary properly...

lol, did you even understand/listen to the video?
most of the time both OC is having the same result, go view/listen to the video again at the 2:02 mark.
For most of the games, you will not see much difference, unless you can let us know what games you are playing or you can foretell the future games, than maybe you can give 4 number, i strike top price and can sponsor you the i7.
so generally i5 is still better value as compare to i7 unless you have the cash flow, go ahead and get the i7, of course i7 will be better than i5.

its like buying car, you buy a Ferrari and i buy a Honda but both of us are caught in the jam cannot move, got what use. but if open road, of course you will be faster but in the same time, you will be burning more fuel ($$$) also. but as i have said, if you got the money, why not a Ferrari.

See this video here
The following video is from the same guy you posted, see the fps, it is always constant.

The way I looked at the video was different from you. I paused the video several times, taking note of the fps between the various CPUs. And I noted somewhere between 5-15 fps difference between the i5s and i7s during heavy loads. Its especially striking in GTA during the part when the helicopter swoops down towards the building. The i5s drop fps while the i7s are holding their ground. Yes, most of the time, most of the games, we wont notice the difference unless we are running FRAPS and looking at the counter.

Yes, the i5 is a better value in terms of performance/$ just like the GTX 970 I bought earlier is a better value compared to GTX 980 in terms of performance/$.

It is usually the case that higher end products give diminishing returns. Just like some of the ppl like to say i5 is a better value (I do agree its a better value), GTX 970 is a better value (same goes for AMD R390). For those who are gaming using GTX 980, I hope they are gaming on 2K monitors as GTX 980 on 1080p is overkill most of the time. GTX 980/Ti is probably more for those who love to see nice nice fur such as hairworks. But of course, that's how Nvidia works, using proprietary tech to make ppl buy more of their fatter profit margin higher end 980s.

I wont buy Ferraris as they seem to be at risk of burning into flames lol..Seen so many videos...maybe a Chery QQ is better lol

I paused the video several times and saw that the fps of the i7s are indeed higher than i5s on many occasions, but not by much. It was a slim victory for the i7s. But the part when the helicopter swoops down towards the buildings in GTA, the i5s drop quite alot. Not sure where is the bottleneck, was it also due to graphics card or RAM limitations?

I look more at facts first, before listening to the opinions of the tester. Just like MoneyFace earlier posted a Eurogamer chart proposing that RAM does not factor much into performance (was it what he posted?) and yet the Eurogamer tester concluded that gamers should shoot for DDR4 2666 as the sweet spot.

We can discus all day and I guess at the end of the day, if I want to save $150-$165, I can go for i5. If I got the money to splurge, I can go for i7.

I personally find that i5 + GTX 970 is the perfect gaming machine for a 1080p monitor (for now).

As a third party, I think you are clearer.

So please supply the answer.

I suspect the answer is i7...lol

there's always room for improvement and in the end, it's ultimately down to the user if the little things that make the difference matters. no right or wrong. u should spend on the things tat bother u (like the fps difference between i5 & i7).
