eh personally i don't want to talk much about healthcare profession in general. even if pcp is flawed in any industry from ICT to nursing, it is still some form of options which are better than none.

anyway my personal prediction about this software development PCP is that it will not last long as it is not that different from taking a very intensive boot camp. People have this misconception that they are there simply to learn to make static website which is not the case. Anyway for software developers with decades of experience it is very difficult for them to write their code in other language. Use bitcoin as example, at that time javascript is one of the easiest language to write in and the creator instead uses C++. Luckily by the time ethereum is released, the bunch of opensource developers are more flexible in the language they uses.

They are indeed local Singaporeans. They took up the course thinking that they can just pick up the skills and create their own company applications instead of outsourcing. End up these employers got shocked at how difficult it is to create an application and gave all sorts of excuse to simply leave the course early.

yep surprised that employers can take up the course though that easily without programming background if you mentioned that the application to get in is not so easy..

that's why a lot of employers often think programming is cheap job because they don't really have programming background

well it depends on perspective. Lets say my team charges you 20k USD to do an application for your company which got the standard functions that google, trello, slack, facebook and etc have. The first thing in the minds of client would be that we are overcharging them.

The cost of developing applications for corporate uses are as expensive as renovation costs. Heck even some licences cost 10kUSD per month. The positive side about software is there the open source community is very good.

Not only limited to Healthcare sector like Nursing, so many people have told you before that some sector PCPs are similar while some are totally different from each other. For example, PCP for Pre-School Teachers can last up to 18 months full time course & needs to sign bond. They don't get allowance but they get salary during the course.

I just give a general comment regrading PCP & not comparing PCP for Registered Nurses to PCPs for IT. If you cannot accept general comment from other commenters like me, then you better don't use general comment.

Instead of commenting something like "cheapo la, there are so many options out there today apart from PCP that doesn't require a proper education certificate.. they will accept you as long as you are willing to pay", why can't you use PCP-IT?

it is about PCP but not nursing PCP, it is about IT PCP. So many people have told you before nursing PCP is different from all the others - in nursing PCP you get allowance, need to sign bond, get to attend full time course for few years... there is NONE of this in the IT PCP at all, so there is no point comparing the 2 of them.

by the way i dont see that signing a bond is that bad of an issue. the person who signed the bond should not regret during the period due to poor remuneration or working environment as the employer did not force you sign the bond in the first place. what a person primary need is an source of income.

anyway about software developers the learning progression is getting faster. Comparing a decade ago, at most nurse or doctors need to learn how to use some new equipment that can be trained in days. However software wise new frameworks are popping out on daily basis and it is very difficult to catch up with the trend. For example now we have 3 very popular javascript framework, angular, react, vue. API is getting more common and we may even see a totally new form of electronics just like how many developers are picking up how to program mobile applications.

My experience is not from PCP-IT but PCP-RN. They will ask you to sign Letter of Undertaking (liquidated damage of $1000 if you decided not to take up the PCP) before they show you the bond deed (All the unfair terms). So they indirectly force us to take up the course or face liquidated damage of $1000 just to see the bond deed.

Passing out from course is another issue. Never know a public school like have inconsistent standard (lecturer, assessor & course materials are not consistent). My senior & I face this problem.

Passing your probation period & appraisal is another thing during bond period. Some Employers with low budget setup in private sector do not have a proper performance measurement system. So it is purely up to them to determine if they don't like you & terminate your employment contract which cause you to break bond to pay around $170K of liquidated damage. My friend face this problem.

I cannot comment about software developer since I am not one myself. However as a user, there are so many applications that no one really use it.

It the management fault cause they just keep requesting to change it. Before operation staffs learn or use it for a period of time, it change again.

Some forever never change in order not to affect the operation.

i am currently in the PCP for full stack software developer course. Employer / government agenda aside, this full stack course is quite demanding.

Prior to this course i need learn up on HTML, CSS and JS. Afterwards comes SASS, ReactJS, cmd/bash, ruby, github/bitbucket, AngularJS, SQL, JAVA, Watson API, responsive design, python and jquery.

These skills need to learn in 3-6 months. To even get shortlisted for interview as software engineer, i suggest build up your github portfolio.

i heard its crazy fast.
i'd rather use skillsfuture credit and get some udemy course online.

but whats the criteria for PCP? need to be unemployed for a few months? any age criteria?

Critieria is straightforward:

-either unemployed for more than 6 months
-or if you are working but from a completely different industry (e.g. if you in finance but want to switch to IT). If within IT but you are from different fields, still possible I think (e.g. if you are in networking but want to switch to software development)

But the difficult part is getting into the program. The normal way is you send you resume to the main institutions running the PCP courses (e.g. Lithan, NTUC Learning Hub, NUS ISS, Comat, etc for IT PCP), then they will forward your resume to the prospective employers who had signed up for this. But as you can guess, the number of people who send their resumes is probably far greater than the amount of employers who had signed up.

So the other way is you try and find your own prospective company, talk to them about this initiative, then link them up with the respective institutions yourself like what jgyy1990. Because actually a lot of employers and companies do not know about this initiative at all.

The last way of course, if you just sign up for the PCP as an individual. Basically you pay yourself (instead of the company paying) and just attend the same courses and be in the same batch as the other PCP people who are already employed. You will still be eligible for the subsidies, just lesser. Then maybe try to find a job yourself after that.

for coding there are a few ways to learn other than getting a degree in computer science. First is online video courses like udemy as you said. Another is coding bootcamp which is that the PCP is all about. The last method i know is to actively take part in open source community projects like building up popular websites like e-commerce, web/mobile apps, blockchains and etc.

PCP is a very nice added bonus for coding bootcamps if you know how to utilise it cause government literally fund you without stringent requirement of a bond.

by the way do note that software engineer or data scientist in general is very demanding, so think hard before bothering to study coding.

In case i have not made myself clear to readers here. PCP is already non-existent. ( At least confirmed for the IT, Engineering & Aerospace by myself & several people i know. )
I guess those industries already got ppl they need & for some reason, decide not participate this offer again.

It's just for show. You can try Retail or Hospital training... i heard these are very "HOT" now & guaranteed ' go in one! ' .

BTW, i've just receive a call fr ISS- nus? saying their intakes all full & wait for next year. ( 2019? ) :s11: LOL...

Its not non-existent, its just that the amount of employers who are interested in this is far less than the amount of applicants. Like I mentioned in my previous posts long ago, my friend's company only looked to this scheme only as a last resort.. not even interested even with the salary funding as it is only for a year.

For NUS-ISS one think maybe a lot ppl sign up as individuals that's why its full

angular framework is mainly for organisation when you want to standardize the codes for the entire team. anyway i am still newbie in the MEAN stack.

Hi jgyy1990

I would like to request for some advice from you regarding your experience.

I am very keen on a switch to the I.T. industry, but having gone to the Lithan briefing, their sales oriented approach of rushing to sell the program (which I didn't even indicate) makes me a bit apprehensive.

Could you please share how you went about finding an employer for participation in the PCP, and how did you manage to convince them to take you on? It seems really incredible from my point of view.

I have also applied for the PCP. Is there any advice you have to prepare for it? (Assuming I do get selected of course)

Thanks!

The PCP is all about networking. I have no way of telling you the exact steps of finding rich people. Anyway my case is about networking with relatives who wanted to set up an IT company. As they need local headcount for S Pass, i am easily accepted as i am willing to take the risk of joining start-up.

I have no comment about aggressive sales tactics mentioned. What i am taking up is software development. You need to be prepared to burn your free time to practice coding for the rest of your working life to be proficient. For starters you need to learn HTML, CSS/SASS, Javascripts/Typescripts. Afterwards its react/angular/vue, node.js, express.js, mysql/mongodb/oracle/firebase. If you dont like web development and wanted to be data analytic, need to learn GO, PHP, C++/C#, python, ruby and etc.

edit: if you are not aiming to code, ignore my words.
