Tempted to get an Asus C536 USD399 and hope that have BF sales.

Asus say precision engineered but this laptop is expensive, cheaply made and full of flaws

1 : The white plastic back is easily scratched. Poor material.

2: The touchpad does not feel good to use

3: The bottom cover made of cheap plastic

4: The lcd bezels are ridiculously big for 2021.

5: Keyboard keys are smaller than normal size for laptop. you will make more typing mistake

6: 250 nit brightness is too low for outdoor use. standard laptops are 300 or more

The reviews made similar comments of its flaws. Some I am ok with but some may be more of a concern.

Anyway, the price has gone back up. So it doesn't look that appealing now.

Actually is it possible to get a decent Chromebook within SGD500 with shipping all in?

Will be using it for
  • zoom meetings
  • reading school notes/textbook
  • writing reports in MS words
  • check work emails
  • light internet surfing
  • Likely won't be using it to download videos or play games.

Just saw the flex5 priced at SGD465 on Amazon.sg with free shipping. Vaguely recall that this is a recommended model. Should fit your needs, but do check reviews online

Some models are already on sales ahead of BFCM, mostly in US though. Google it.

Indeed you are right the CPU performance is similar. So that does bring back memory.

I have no experiences with Chromebook but it is based on Linux and light-weight, it may still be okay as long as the expectation is not too high. I have the Celeron N4500 dual core based mini PC (Chuwi Herobox Pro, 8GB/256GB) and it can actually handle Proxmox hypervisors with a few Linux containers and a few Linux VMs. It is kind of similar to N4020 as well. Then I have Intel Celeron J4105 quad-core based mini PC (8GB/256GB) running PVE and pfSense/OpenWRT dual routers now. Previously it ran Ubuntu 21.10 very smoothly with a few docker containers on top.

Review: the main complaint from the reviewer is not the performance but rather low quality screen.

Seems like hardly any Chromebook models available in the local market... want to buy must buy from overseas?
