I will be re-entering the work force next month, working for my friend for a while. As he suggested, it is at least a way to get back on payroll and have some leverage while continuing to look for other roles.

Just this past week, I heard from another friend that his boss has this mindset that if someone has been out of a job for a while, they assume the person is unwanted and won’t even consider interviewing them.

It's been a while — and after almost a year of job search, I got an offer! I start next monday

The thing is it's a contract role that lasts for about one and a half years, pay is just under $4k (2024 graduate), 6 month probation

Well, just gonna learn as much as I can, hopefully I do well enough to get contract renewed or even convert to perm, so please wish me luck!
bro. congrats. at least get back to having payroll. jiayou.

I will be starting work soon; will be going back to the GLC I was in after referral from an old friend in there (funnily, the only interview I passed was my first job... subsequent jobs all asked for referrals). While in there, have to see 怎么办 since I am in my 40s + it's tech -> opportunities not there liao.

Jia you! It really seems like once you hit your late 30s or 40s, a lot of people start facing challenges when it comes to finding a job. You're definitely not alone in this.

Yeah, this friend is actually the one who got me into my first job many years ago. He recently found out I was still jobless close to a year, and so, i felt he just asked me to help him out to help me. He had already approached me 1–2 years ago, but back then I had just joined that toxic place. Now, it just so happens that things have aligned on his end, so he asked me again, leaving the option for me if I ever want to move on later.

Honestly, I can only say I have been saved by this friend, yet again. Really feel like he’s my "en ren". That said, I know it’s not something unlikely to do in the long term. Just keeping my options open for now since the job market is brutal, and I haven’t had many interviews since end March 2025.

It's the tech stack mismatch that blocks me from a lot of tech roles; I can pick them up no problem, but I do not have the required exp in those tech stacks. I accepted the current role when I realized that no point trying to hiam/wait when the market is already chui.

Just accept and continue finding. At least you know you still on payroll. Anything that comes after that then you see how

Did Starhub offshored their finance function to KL ? I see their finance job openings majority based there.

Hmm maybe? Probably shared service there with only managerial positions in Singapore?

Sinkie too expensive liao...
If not wrong, the accountant / senior fpa pay in Singapore was about 6k region... That's almost 20k myr which they probably can hire 2-3 pple in KL. Especially if the role is just repeatedly doing reports without providing new insights
Sinkies are generally too ex to hire for white collar jobs now unless there are security concerns. My old job, 1 principal engineer in Indonesia and 1 senior engineer is paid the same as a fresh grad in sg each iirc (remote ma), and the foreign hires are minimally as good as the local ones, with some of them really standing out.

In that sense we are kinda like US now; affected by global markets + the problem of being too expensive.

So, Singaporeans can only do PHV or food delivery in the future since there is no job left for us.
