“Can you really explain to a fish what it’s like to walk on land? One day on land is worth a thousand years of talking about it, and one day running a business has exactly the same kind of value.”

Actually, it's best you experience it for yourself. FA or TA, all can learn from books and websites. Only when you put $$ in, then you know what kind of investor you are.

That said, it's really cheap to get your feet wet with SCB/IB or even BCIP, bonds etc...

All the theory is useless. Actually put in your money and really start to see your balls shrink when prices drop. It's the real test of your mettle.

MUST have Holding Power!
don't sell out in fear, especially if u are confident of the fundamentals
as market goes lower, keep buying... such opportunities come in once in a few years or a decade

its easier to see ur ball shrinks when u still have some cash on hand and dont need to panic sell ur stocks for emergency cash..

I will recommend 2 things to do now:
1. Start compiling a list of stocks that you want to buy or aim to buy.
2. Start compiling the list of stocks that you have bought on hear-say, gut feel, gossip-vine and sell them off.

When you feel like the sky is dropping and world coming to an end, pull out the first list, and buy them.
Pull out the 2nd list, and congratulate yourself that you have sold them off already.
These will avoid you panic buying or selling at that time when emotion will be your worst enemy.

sometime whether to kio from market low is all about timing and age..

i started working and accumulate some warchest during 2007 then started investing at the top.. jin emo one..

whereas dividend warrior started accumulating his warchest much later, and when he was ready to kio, it was already at market low, and without fear and experience, manage to go kio at low.

that downturn, i was super broke sia becos of contra loss, have to sell my holding to pay off losses...

lucky the downtrend lasted 15 months, enough time for me to re-accumulated my warchest to kio back below 2000, then the rest was history..

but **, when i was kio-ing, i was really very nervous, everyday glue to cnbc read news cause if sti really continue to downtrend and break 1000, i think i will go bedok reservoir jump liaoo

yeah really see timing and age

DW was very lucky to start investing at the lows 2008-2009 period, the reit that he bought was like 9%-10% yields... sibei song

I still remember 2007 I had to hold my portfolio 2 years+ then recover........

2011 european crisis I also tio hit, held 1 year or so till recovery

end of the day holding power really important

power of CD also important... the index going nowhere in terms of capital gains, but if every year get 5% dividends at least the portfolio give u some returns

yeah, that time i remember when i had my first brokerage account, sti was like 3200.

i really kio all without fear, kio and kio, drop how much, i also kio like you all, then my portfolio started to grow, and felt very confident. then see people hoot contra so easy make money, and then go hoot contra also..

i remember i got hold a bloomberg magazine, it was talking abt the pending debt issue, 6 months before the lemmann brother crisis, then i tell myself, sti 4000 must sell all

but i grew very confident, cos contra, as long can hold until t+5, surely can make money, and so keep hoot

hoot until one weekend can contra paper loss $18,000 lol

That time I only just started working, no warchest at all. Later then found out about scb trading, apply and slowly add in monthly dca. If that time sti 1500 already working, think I would have almost $700k now already.
