How to learn how to invest in shares when you just started - A safe and cheap way (Buying unit shares less than 1000 shares where brokerage is less than $10*)
This week, I would like to share a method that I am in favour since young of which I have mention in some of my posting earlier. That is to buy 100 shares or even 1 share to get the annual report and be able attend AGM. I just receive the invitation to attend Del Monte AGM on 30th Aug 2016 10am at level 2 M hotel. Do note I only own 4 shares as I sold out most when I realise the gearingof this company is too high and left myself with some odd lot. The trick is if I buy 10000 shares I will purposely buy additional 1 or 2 shares from unit shares to amalgamate as one trade. Hence when I trade and sell I will sell 10000 shares, leaving the 1 share in my CDP. DO NOTE DO NOT DO THIS in custody account like StanChart or prepaid or margin account as there could be additional custody fee or admin fee. I love to collect annual report and read up on companies that I have intention to invest. And you learn a lot reading the annual report and learn and study shareholdings as well as debts.
Over the years using this method I have own so many companies that I get to eat a lot of free food during AGM, collect a lot of freebies like mall discount vouchers from Wing Tai, merchandise from CK Tang. Sometime I get to take back cakes from Raffles Hotel while I learn from those experts asking questions at AGM and enriching myself. Should I one day become very poor and no money to eat, I intend to have good food at AGM despite holding little shares. Just kidding
But this is not a bad backup plan. I know of report of ugly Singaporean grabbing buffet food at AGM but I am not one of them. I applaud them as these people at their own free time go attend AGM and eat free food and learn more about the company.
But my only regret in introducing this method is I cause more tress to be cut down and more paper to be wasted. Hence I am reluctant to post and share this. Until recently someone ask can a few shares attend AGM. The answer is YES. Do not look down on your few shares as the food that you can eat, knowledge you can learn, and the books given by the company that you can sell to your usual Garang Guni Man can more than recoup the cost of buying the odd lot to invest and learn. The brokerage for Phillip is $10 for unit share so is cheap but I am not sure about the rest.
I love this method and I guard this secret but I think is good to share for those new investors to learn. If you got no money to buy, buy a few share is ok. Just like buying a novel and read and learn. You will be surprise that the dividend credited from such unit shares is substantial over the years. Is a fun method too. No money got no money way to invest.
To bro BULLYTHEBEAR, do not scold me as I know this method is not environmental friendly
Also do not think I am cheapo. HAHAHA.
Have a good coming week ahead all. I think this sharing is super beneficial to a lot of people here as they never think of this before. LOL. Buying original share plus 1 odd share to keep it. Sound good right.
For further discussion and reprimand for being environmental unfriendly or cheapo.
