Off-topic a bit.

Was watching this video about Koreans trying their hardest to get out and immigrate to America.

My head was already in my hands midway through, due to the ridiculously dumb decisions that they make just to get that visa. Especially for the professionals willing to give up everything and do menial work.

What do you fellas think?

Well, we are not them so probably we won't experience what they do (unless you're korean). If I'm forced to work, say 8am to 12am everyday, I think its best i pay a small fortune (>20k USD) to get out of hell once and for all. :o

Lol... After SG/MY last year, now China and HK turn ...

McDonald's sells China operations for US$2.08b

BEIJING: US fast-food giant McDonald's will sell its mainland China and Hong Kong franchise business to a consortium of Citic Group and the Carlyle Group for up to US$2.08 billion, the companies said Monday (Jan 9).

Citic Limited, Citic Capital Holdings, Carlyle Group and McDonald's will form a company that will act as the franchisee responsible for the chain's business in mainland China and Hong Kong for 20 years, Citic Limited said in a statement to the Hong Kong stock exchange.

Citic and Citic Capital will have a controlling stake of 52 per cent, Carlyle will have 28 per cent, and McDonald's will hold 20 per cent of the new company.

The burger chain announced its plan to sell its roughly 2,000 restaurants in China last year, after its sales took a hit as tensions in the South China Sea impacted US companies' results in the country.

Its business in the country also suffered a hit in 2014 after a food safety scandal involving one of its meat suppliers.

The new company will focus on growth in China's smaller, regional cities, and will plan to open more than 1,500 restaurants in the mainland and Hong Kong over the next five years.

Citic, a vast conglomerate with interests in businesses from energy and manufacturing to real estate, said in a statement to the Hong Kong stock exchange that the purchase would deepen its exposure to China's consumer sector, "which is poised to be the main driver of China's economy for decades to come".

Good way for McDonald's to realise some value from the overseas empire which it built over decades...:D

Thanks for sharing this programme clip.

You have to understand the social and work stress level in Japan and Korea is very high. In these countries if you arrive home early after work your wife will F you upside down for not socialising with your boss/colleagues or overtime at work. It is a conformity and hierarchical society.

As in this case working manual jobs to get the ultimate green card is the fastest way for them to start living the lifestyle these Koreans are pursuing. I support them morally because I can understand how they think.

Singapore is still the best.

Singapore is not the absolute best. It practices elitism. If you do not make it to the top. You are stucked in the middle and neither here or there. This is the region where the MIW wants the majority to be in. Too busy working to dwell on politics. Kids thrown into preschool at 2 years old. All parents worry about their kids of losing out. Unless you are people like me which reject the system and do your own thing.

It depends on what you want in your life. Unker like me cannot fit into Singapore totalitarian society because I do not like conformity. Luckily I am able to earn my current mini fortune in overseas and enjoying my semi retired lifestyle. :s13:

Maybe I am easily satisfied......but I always missed Singapore whenever I am aboard.

Simple things like:
- Cheap and good food
- NTUC
- Plastic bags at NTUC
- Proximity to shopping center/MRT/bus
- Good shopping center
- Affordable taxi fares
- and so on.

I love Singapore. Unfortunately I don't like the vision of the current group of MIW. But still, I love Singapore.

I fully understand where you are coming from. Although the part about wife screwing the husband upside down for coming home early is more of a stereotype than reality for Japanese millennials. In fact most Japanese women prefer their husbands to come home earlier because of the daily stresses of raising a young kid ;)

You are now based in Canberra, as your nickname implies?
