Hi guys,

Need some advice here. I understand that one day soon all ADSL broadband plans will be phased out for 100% fibre usage. Currently I'm using 15 Mbps ADSL.

I live in landed property, and initially missed the free installation by OpenNet many years ago. I've been planning to contact OpenNet or SingTel (who will still contact OpenNet anyway if I were to sign up for their fibre plans) to install the TP point in my house (with the $450 charge or not, but most prob have to suck thumb and pay). I'm not sure whether any RELIABLE ISPs offer waiving of the installation of TP point for a simple 100 - 150 Mbps plan currently.

Another issue is the location of the TP point. I would love a wired connection, but my room is on the second floor. Any chance of having a wired connection on upper floors? Trunking might get a little complicated or messy I think.

And the last issue is, my parents plan to tear down (not renovate) the entire house to build a whole new house. However, it's not confirmed whether they will do it or when they will do it. Should I stick to ADSL and wait until the house is torn down, rebuilt, then get (and pay) for installation of fibre? I'm pretty sure if I pay for installation now and then my house gets torn down, when it's rebuilt I'll have to pay again for a new installation (which is actually pretty dumb >.<)

Thanks in advance for any advice :)

hve u got what u need?

Hi,
Yes now I know that Open net only bring in the fiber cable to a location in the house. Then the rest is connected by LAN cable if go by wired.

I just got a contractor to help lay the conduit above my false ceiling costing me $120..not sure if this is expensive. Next week Open Net will just lay the fiber cable to my living room.

I would be using wireless so don't intent to lay LAN cables to all my rooms. Also the contractor review and say cant convert my phone to LAN points so will leave it.

SINGAPORE - OpenNet, the builder of Singapore's fibre broadband network, has been fined a total of $750,000 for not meeting its Universal Service Obligation (USO) and Quality of Service (QoS) standards, said the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) in a statement today. :s8:

Left hand gives right hand money again, beside $750K is no kick for an organization that scale. Fine top management personal wallet then can solve problem fast fast, if you don't want to take responsibility then don't sit so high up.

do take note that Opennet only do the TP, and from the TP to the ONT is
by fibre. Then from the ONT to router is LAN cable......

Open net just finish my fibre installation. The guy who came say he also provide service to lay fibre on false ceiling with a fee $80-$100. Mine already done so he had a easy job to do. After they did the drilling and trunking, they don't clean the place and left.

An hour later another 2 guy came install the points and check the connection.

do you still have to wait for a few days (after the installation, drilling etc) for the connection to be established?

Open net only do laying of the fibre cable from outside to inside of house. They will check if there is connection on the same day.

Now wait for Singtel appointment next week to install the rest (Modem, HD box).

Just now ON did the installation at my place. They tested with some laser light pen but it did not lit up . Then they did some splicing again. The Optical power meter reading was showing -25.16dbm ( I took a pic of it). Am not sure this is Ok.

ON guys said it is ok. I saw the test measurement in the form for 1310nm, 1490nm,1550nm as 0.75, 0.70 and 0.65 respectively. They did not test this. They just wrote this no. infront of me. When i asked them can i see these nos. on the meter. They said it is a different reading. The meter for this is different and will be tested outside the house.

After so much of argument, they finally said , if any problem they will come and attend again . No need to pay anything extra.

Am not sure if this is ok. Can any one share what was their reading ? and if -25.16dbm ok ?

Thanks in advance.

Seeking advises from bros there...

Currently having SH cable plan which has expired. thinking of switching to fiber. Is it better to place the Router and ONT placed in my living room or my study room?

There is only one wall separating my study and living room.
My main PC is in the study room. Thanks!

Cons (study room)
-No powerpoint unless do new ones
-troublesome next time if want to link to tv.

Pros (study room)
-near to PC,can use direct Lan . other devices use wifi.

Pros (Living room)
-same location as current cable plan layout. no need to think for powerpoints.
-easier next time if want to link to tv.

Cons (Living room)
- Lousier connection??
