H3C Magic NX30 Pro may not be as good as Xiaomi AX3000T, but the good thing is that it is supported by the official OpenWRT release now. To me is probably more suitable as an AP than being a router since it has only 256MB RAM.

I have just got an H3C Magic NX3 Pro from Taobao for RMB 179 + GST + Sea Shipment.

Note: I do not recommend this model. This is just an experiment for me.
Note: I do not recommend buying routers with 256MB RAM in general even though I tend to think they may be okay to be used as an AP. Lower cost models may not have good workmanship (eg: H3C Magic NX30 Pro).


Stock FW is based on a version of OpenWRT which seems to be not configured properly for OpenWRT.

I just tried the Chinese Immortal OpenWRT and it does not seem to be as good as Stock OpenWRT -- got too many packages installed which I do not use.

If I run OOkla SpeedTest CLI client from within the router, upload speed is quite slow. Not so sure why.

Note: I do not recommend buying routers with 256MB RAM in general even though I tend to think they may be okay to be used as an AP. Lower cost models may not have good workmanship (eg: H3C Magic NX30 Pro). And it is better to avoid those very low cost models with no brand.

If you want to play safe, the GL.iNet models are safer bet but of course they cost higher. Xiaomi AX3000T (more useful as an AP) and Redmi AX6000 should be safer bet in terms of HW quality. But then the flashing of OpenWRT can be a bit tricky for Xiaomi models.

Not related to OpenWRT but rather on the comparison of 4 low cost WiFi 6 routers based on Filogic 820, including Xiaomi WR30U and H3C NX30 Pro which support OpenWRT.

For those who want a bit better one, Redmi AX6000 is using Filogic 830 and the price is pretty okay.

But if you want a working OpenWRT system out of box (customized by GL.iNet), then you can get the GL.iNet GL-MT3000 (Filogic 820, single 2.5G port) and GL.iNet GL-MT6000 (Filogic 830, dual 2.5G ports). The price is still quite reasonable.

The above is using MediaTek wireless driver.

The following is using another firmware with OpenWRT open source wireless driver with MTK wireless acceleration turned ON. The speed seems to be lower. And it keeps losing the connection. Looks like this snapshot is too new to be stable.

SW/HW offloading are both ON as well.

I was hoping that wireless bufferbloat test will be good but actually it is quite bad.

I was hoping that wireless bufferbloat test will be good but actually it is quite bad.

imho... all these test are quite meaningless
they are all pre build.. and OLD... if not straight out ancient in openwrt speak
if you wanted old openwrt that are 2 years old.. might as well stick to vendor firmware
my suggestion.. stick to the latest snapshots.. clone out the official repo and build your own builds. customize until you song! this is where openwrt's value lies and where the learning can happen
for qualcomm and mtk chipset.. follow their network hardware offload developments as well

for ipq8074 based builds with 6.6.30 kernel with nss offload.. for kicks
1) sqm at 900mbps+ both upload and download
2) 80MHz wifi ax.. 850mbps+ upload, 900mbps+ download.. and this is on really conservative apple hardware

bufferbloat has never been an issue with or without sqm for openwrt... if the firmware developer knows what he/she is doing

there seems to be strong interest and development momentum on filogic 880
so serious considering getting BPI-R4 to play around

H3C Magic NX30 Pro may not be as good as Xiaomi AX3000T, but the good thing is that it is supported by the official OpenWRT release now. To me is probably more suitable as an AP than being a router since it has only 256MB RAM.

I am not so sure if it is true that 256MB is a limit if using as an AP.

I bought the H3C NX30 Pro as an experiment since the OpenWRT experts says that TXQS+ATF+AQL will do wonders with bufferbloat testing. I do not really care about waveform.com bufferbloat testing results myself since Singtel has bad routing to the test server -- the score is not accurate. In fact, I do not care about bufferbloat since I do not see it as an issue for my use cases.

But this is just for comparison purpose -- I am supprised NX30 Pro with TXQS+ATF+AQL features actually gets the worst results from waveform.com bufferbloat test. The tests are near range test and the signal is strong. I get straight As from my Asus RT-AX86U and ZTE BE7200 Pro+.

Personally I do not care about wireless router with OpenWRT. I already set my main OpenWRT setup as Intel N100 Mini PC with virtual OpenWRT router + wireless AP (ZTE BE7200 Pro+ now, Asus RT-AX82U previously). Sometimes I also swap out OpenWRT with pfSense or OPNsense.

BTW, for serious SQM performance above 1Gbps (say 2Gbps or 2.5Gbps), x86_64 mini PC is the way to go. But I do not think SQM is really needed for my use case. So I do not care about SQM in reality.

My other network is with Asus RT-AX86U.

but seriously from a wireless perspective.. AX3600 with the latest openwrt is on par with my AX86u Pro
only advantage of AX86u Pro is that i can manipulate it to use chan 165-177 with tuf ax3000 as a wifi bridge
