Did the same.
Not easy to get triple sharing. Managed to get hotel Granvia Osaka for $133 early February - 3 single beds. Just walk out of jr Osaka station central gates. Easy to get to Kyoto as hotel is just at the station.

Didn't want to spend time searching for hotel or walking/ transfer after long day.

Downside jr line from kix to OSAKA take around an hour. From March Hanuka line should be stopping at Osaka. Don't know if it's faster.

In the end, managed to settle for one night stay at Dotobori Shinsaibashi Hotel at $104, Futon beds

osaka metro is very extensive and there r many lines

it can get u anywhere within Osaka city

will b worth it if u plan to make aroun 6 trips in a day ... cheapest fare is Jpy180 (i think)

the Metro Pass on weekend is only Jpy600, even better value

just cannot take the railway like Keihan, Kintetsu or airport trains

either check if places u want to go are near metro stations OR just plan your trips around metro stations

Mostly yet icoca card as didn't use trains extensively. Most of the time walked around.
