HDR movies, I think still ok.
HDR gaming is a bit dumb. Damn uncomfortable, especially since our eyes have to focus on the really close screen and look for details

For gaming some calibration will be needed, once set and calibrated correctly in windows it is quite substantial improvement for overall HDR experience

Not really leh. HDR on OLED is a dream. The only time I actually felt HDR was useless was on non-OLED panels. I had to actually force myself to see a difference to the point I actually didn't bother with it. On OLED, it's very obvious. And some games are extraordinarily good with it like Cyberpunk.

If you look at HDR on games like Call of Duty, the lighting and shadows are the biggest difference. Explosions are spectacularly bright and flashbangs is blinding. Some may like it some won't. I've recorded it in HDR and if you watch it in 1440p HDR, you will understand what I mean. Even switching to HDMI 2.1 made HDR performance much better in terms of how punchy and dynamic HDR is. I was on DP 1.4 for the longest time and switched to HDMI 2.1 after @Yongkit mentioned even he noticed HDR was better with HDMI 2.1.

It's good when it works, looks stupid when it doesn't. Currently using RTX HDR for most games for ease of customization (lower brightness when at night etc). Using true black 400 mode instead of peak 1000nits as the ABL dimming is super bad on the latter.

I didn't see you mentioned on the HDR calibration tool though you are using windows 10. It was also a recommendation from Nvidia to use the HDR calibration tool for the rtx hdr.
I have done the calibration using the tool. I am using windows 11 not 10.
Although these days I would have to say I just leave HDR on all the time, colors look good but somewhat inaccurate, which is expected since most of windows is SDR content

some info on Unreal Engine development with HDR10+

https://www.fab.com/listings/82da4a90-e93b-47a8-b001-28c763265b80

Extract below -

Technical details

The HDR10+ GAMING Plug-in for Unreal Engine provides dynamic HDR game output at display’s maximum brightness without manual, user setup and sets the connected display to the HDR10+ GAMING mode.

Currently, the HDR10+ GAMING Plug-in works with NVIDIA and INTEL GPU's.

The Plug-in is based on UE 5.5, UE 5.4, UE 5.3.0, UE 5.2.1, UE 5.1 and UE 5.0. For others, you can build your own based on the source code.

PC:
  • Windows 10 version 1803 or later
  • NVIDIA graphics card that supports PlayReady and has an HDMI port (GeForce RTX and GeForce GTX 16 Series graphics cards and laptops)
  • NVIDIA driver v527.7 or later
    -or-
  • Intel ARC graphics card with an HDMI port
  • Intel ARC driver v31.0.101.5590 or later
Display:
  • Support HDR10+ GAMING
  • HDMI 2.0b or higher
Other:
  • Cable HDMI 2.0b High Speed or HDMI 2.1 Super High Speed.
  • When using laptop, it is important to verify that NVIDIA GPU is in charge of display output to verify NVIDIA implementation.
  • You can find the available NVIDIA API here.

Now the HDR10+ only support HDMI 2.0b higher and not Display Port. those with Samsung OLED monitor can enjoy 7 games currently certified as HDR10+

Some test on lighting different between HDR10 vs HDR10+

Notice in HDR10+ some light from the lamp post will have shallow faded blue/red light that is not visible in HDR10.

Also some situation where lamp post light is more concentrate half way (50% level) before reaching the floor level, compare to HDR10 straight shining towards floor.

Yonkit,

Do you have this problem where for Cyberpunk everytime you enter the game the HDR Brightness under HDR calibration goes back to 400? It only happens when I enable HDR10+. Just wanted to see if you have this bug.

Oh sorry I didn't notice this bugs when I use the 3080 last 2 weeks.

My 3080 is actually giving me some driver bugs when I have 2 monitors setup and flickering quite frequently when I start PC like searching for monitor signal especially when I try to swap monitor in game to try either monitor it just keep searching for signal for the right monitor and flickering for almost a minute long that worry me will broke my monitors, then I now swapped back to 7900xtx I do not experience the same.

On single monitor setup 3080 seems alright.

I may try it this weekend with single monitor and see if I experience the same you mention and update.

Using DP + hdmi or DP + DP? I noticed things like this happen when using DP + DP high refresh rate on both, stopped happening when I switched to hdmi + dp

Using DP (LG OLED without DCS 144hz 10bit) + HDMI (G8 OLED 240HZ 10bit)

The swapping monitor thing reminds me of when I switch to low resolution in CS2 with RTX 4000 cards and it takes very long to tab out. Sometimes will get stuck in a loop when that happens(hopping between monitors like what you mentioned)

I think RTX 5000 might have solved this issue, now cs2 takes 1s to tab in compared to 4-5s previously. Must be some kind of display scaling issue
