ok this my own experience... which happen 3-4 months ago.

I've been self practising for close to a year n all I can play is nothing but simple accompaniment or some very basic beginner - intermediate scores.

I found myself stuck n cannot improve anymore

Now, just 3 months of lessons im now moving to grade 3 pieces already.

I cant imagine myself able to play these, becos before i took up lessons, i went to flip thru what is so called grade 3 pieces at those yamaha stores... damn hard.

Now is different. Well i practise more than 10 hours a week. so i think must practise hard...

Yup. A teacher (good one) can point you in the right direction and ensure you progress at a stead pace. The most common problem with self teaching is you don't know what pieces you should play next. Too easy and you waste your time, too hard and you get turned off.

Hi everyone~

Glad to know im not the only adult here wishing to learn classical piano at my age :o I've enquired from several music schools and noticed that 1 to 1 lesson is only 45mins / lesson/ week. Don't u all find it too short? Any 88-keys keyboard to recommend for beginner? I'm planning to purchase 1 when I get my bonus ;)

And oh yah...my view is far...i hope to go for the grades & at least can play some nice musical piece like a pro... (very greedy ya =:p ) This is my childhood dream but can only afford it now. Based on 1 week / lesson...how long do you think a normal person can achieve at least a grade 5...?

Cheers!

well i started out straight away at the 3 pieces per grade.

If u had no previous knowledge, the very first few lessons will be on learning music theory, recognising keys and fingering. These might take a while depending on ur pace. n 45 mins u definitely u have alot to learn.

the 45 mins is enough for a 1 to 1 teacher to tell u ur mistakes for the 3 graded pieces. Say u practise very well and u play well, it takes no more than 1 -2 min to finish a piece, then ur teacher tell u where u r wrong.

If u have good music background n understand theory, reading the pieces correctly and practising it will help u alot. If u dun, u gonna spend the 45 mins with ur teacher explaining how it is played.

Why not try the lessons at www.play-by-ear.net for adult pop piano... I've just signed up with them after a demo from their instructors... I think for adult, its easier to pick up from them.

Schools are quite commercialise so try not to go for schools. I taught in schools before and have a lot of friends teaching in schools so i know how they work :)
