Hi, I wonder if the Pioneer PDP-LX5090 is not released in Singapore. It's Pioneer's first 9th Generation 50" plasma TV. It's much cheaper than the KRP-500A, but almost as good. I have seen it in Europe, but never here in Singapore. Anyone if that's the case, and if so, why?

Thanks for your fast reply. I am new to this forum, so I totally missed the Pioneer thread.
Anyway, I couldn't find anything about the PDP-LX5090 in the Pioneer thread. Is the TV released under a different product number in Singapore, or anyone knows if Pioneer Singapore has decided to not release it here, but instead only release the much more expensive KRP-500A? I wish I could afford the KRP-500A though...

Pioneer may quit flat TV biz

TOKYO, JAPAN - STRUGGLING Japanese electronics maker Pioneer Corp said it was weighing various options regarding its loss-making flat TV business including all-out withdrawal and termination of in-house TV production.

Pioneer is projecting a net loss of 78 billion yen (S$1.27 billion) for the year ending March 31, its fifth consecutive year of annual loss, and stopping the flow of red ink in its TV operations is high on the company's list of priorities.

but still consider as good as in 2006 HD not mainstream yet.

[size=10pt] has responded to Japanese press reports that it's about to pull out of the TV business in the face of mounting losses.
And while abandoning the TV market is one option being considered, the company says it's yet to make a decision.
A report in Japan's Nikkei business daily this morning said that Pioneer had decided to stop in-house development and production of flatscreen TVs.
The company has already announced it will be working with Panasonic as a display panel provider for its 2009 plasma models, ending in-house panel production, and sources panels from Sharp for its Europe-only LCD TVs.
But some have interpreted the Nikkei report as a sign that Pioneer TVs are about to vanish altogether.


'Spectrum of possibilities'


However, a company spokesman told Reuters that ending its involvement in the TV business is only one of several options under consideration.
"There is a whole spectrum of possibilities," he said, "with withdrawal on one end, in-house development and production on the other and sales of procured TVs somewhere in the middle".
In other words, the company could be about to ditch TVs altogether, carry on as it is, or simply buy in sets from third-party manufacturers.
Pioneer's strategy in recent years has been to pitch its TVs at the premium end of the market, as it has since launching its Kuro line in 2007, but such thinking has already seen one company pull out of plasma.
Fujitsu abandoned its flatscreen TV business when it felt it could no longer make a profit in the face of relentless downward pressure on prices.
Small market share
The plasma TV market is dominated by Panasonic, Samsung and LG, with Pioneer having a relatively small market share, reflecting its premium pricing.
The European-market LCDs have been widely seen as an effort to gain more of a share in territories where smaller screens are still popular: Sharp, which makes the panels for the Pioneer LCDs, has a 14.3% stake in Pioneer.
Pioneer has also responded to claims in the Nikkei article that it's planning to cut several thousand of its workforce, of around 40,000, by the end of the 2009-10 financial year. The spokesman said no decision had been made on this subject.
The company, which has been projecting a loss of 78bn Yen, or almost £575m, for this financial year, will announce its results for the last three months of 2008 on Thursday. It's also expected to present restructuring plans in the next three weeks.

The KRP500A is a higher-end version of the LX5090, at least according to UK mags where they get both versions. As highly regarded as the LX5090 is in the UK, the 500A scored even higher still. But it's not available in SG.

Hi, recently I had paid a downpayment for the same model but after knowing pioneer is closing their tv division I change my mind.
During the IT show, i bought a Penny 50THPY850 instead. But in term of picture quality, there's no doubt that pioneer is much better.
According to pioneer sales person, they will keep the parts for the next 8 yrs. Thus, is your call : p

so tempted, but went for Pana in the end...

Pioneer is stopping its sales
However people who are serious on their panels and want good PQ are hunting down these panels, so prices are not going south anytime yet...
In fact come April, there is even talk of price increases.
If you feel worried, get a Panasonic or something, much cheaper and better VFM.

I wouldn't worry about it. Even though Pioneer is exiting the business, it will continue to honor the warranties. When warranties run out and certain parts of the panel fails, it will be more economical to buy a new set anyway, so parts availability shouldn't be an issue either.

have a few questions guys. now that pioneer is closing its tv business will its prices go down sharply? also, i have a Pioneer PDP-434HDG that i bought at 3.5 years ago...still in excellent condition..for ard 6.5k. i was wondering what trade in value can i get for this tv at audio house or any other shop? thanks in advance guys
