is battery life a very high priority when choosing a poly laptop? I'm deciding between the y520 and the Inspiron 7567. is 3 hours of uptime enough for poly?

I'm reconsidering the 7567 because of its super huge battery which brings almost double the uptime of the Y520. don't want to get the y520 then regret as need to bring charger everywhere.

3 hours of uptime is quite a handicap.

to me, the battery life is very important because i do not want the burden of additional weight of the charger and also to having to find a place to charge it. remember not all lecture hall has power plug for you to use.

i have continuous class from 10am to 6pm and I can survive without bringing charger. but i am probably left with just 10% at the end of the last class.

Hello...

I am from poly and i know what are you guys are thinking.

Please at least get those weight 2kg and below... No point damaging your back for bringing such a heavy laptop to school everyday. Especially Np students (i was from there), where you guys need to climb hill everyday.

Also most importantly, get a back pack. Don't put your laptop onto a sling bag, it will severely damage you in the long run.

For battery wise, Ngee ann have plugs almost at every table. No problem for np students.

am deciding between HP ProBook 440 G4 and ASUS GL553.

Asus give me the spec but heavy, called them and ask if can add a larger SSD, say cannot change.

HP said its "already the best spec" but will route my request to their sales

any advise to get which of the 2?

When i was in poly, i got a cheap laptop purely for school work. Hardly use it for gaming.

When i go home, i game on my DIY PC.

For example, if i have $2000 budget. I would split $700 for a laptop purely for school work and $1200 on gaming PC.

but the fx553 is almost half your budget and does both :s13:

I don't see how you can have both laptop and DIY PC (gaming) for 1.1k

I think he is saying that the FX553 is big and heavy and has poor battery life, therefore he would rather buy a cheap and light laptop with better battery life so that he does not need to carry around a heavy laptop or be stuck to a power socket.

Requote the truth/vicious cycle

Though people will still buy low battery life / 15" gaming laptops for school, hugging wall sockets as batteries get progressively worse. And carrying ~3KG (power adapter inclusive) for 14-15" with discrete Nvidia or AMD graphics.

Before factoring in weight of notes and books.

Student time first laptop:

Try to squeeze out performance per dollar.
But after the first laptop, should have a clear idea of laptop for max portability unplugged vs. desktop for performance than something in the middle of the road that isn't the most ideal for either use case. :s13:

Macs, starbucks, newer libraries you name it, tend to not have public accessible power sockets to prevent laptop users from camping and makes a battery life machine more practical.
True story. Going back to school again, I value aftersales support on top of battery life and weight :o

hi guys do you think topping up 90$ for an additional 2 year warranty (total 3 years warranty) is worth it?

warranty for laptop is very important for poly students, especially onsite warranty. Just make sure it covers 3 years of your poly life.

That's why only buy laptop with next business day onsite and maximum of 1 week resolution with loan if more than that.. I think only ThinkPad is offering this. ThinkPad not ideapad

The Dell 7567 will last about 6 hours for normal usage and 1 and a half hours if you are playing games (pls refer to the video reviews). But do bear in mind the terrible TN screen, the weight, the cost, etc...which I talked about.

If you are really concerned about the battery life, you need to ask yourself these few questions. Do you need a discrete GPU (e.g. GTX 1050Ti) in your laptop for your course? Or you have very limited space at home such that you can only accommodate a laptop? Do you intend to game when outside? You will also have to factor in the weight for other stuff that you will be carrying such as your books, files, notes, water bottle, etc...

If you only need to use Microsoft Office/less demanding programs or you have a gaming PC at home or you don't plan on gaming when outside, then it's not necessary to buy a bulky and power hungry gaming laptop for your studies. Instead you should consider getting a lightweight and more power efficient laptop e.g. ultrabook.

Before you buy your laptop, please go to the showroom or retail store to have an actual feel of the laptop (i.e. check the screen quality, keyboard, weight, build quality, etc...). Also try bargaining with the salespeople or get freebies and do ask them if you have any questions about the laptop.

Lastly, you can take our comments and reviews as a guide, but no point buying something based on comments/reviews and then finding out it's not suitable for your usage. Hopefully, you can find a laptop that suits your needs.
