He might have another pc at home for games. My children play games but not those games that need high end graphic laptops. In fact, they nowadays only play on phone.
Parents should monitors their children but not many have the time. So different families have different strategies.

I also won't buy high ends laptops that play games but also not chrome books. I find them too restrictive for learning, esp in sec/jc

This approach is just an exhibition of control and giving you a false sense that you know best.

If they are school going age then they should learn to make decision. Who are we to say that gaming in school is a bad thing.

In our days we play basketball or soccer in school to past time. Now they game. No difference. It is okay as long as it is not excessive. Last time students are also not in proper attire when they play. I am implying that they dun need a full gaming laptop. A relative lightweight laptop with light gaming. I find it acceptable. In the end it is they who are using it not us. We should set the budget on what we can afford. They should learn to make their own purchase decision. If they can go Poly they are at a age that they can protect our country. Give them more due credit.

Actually, you want it to be fast, best choice is change the HDD to SSD then it will be a lot faster.

I changed my wife's almost more than 10 year old laptop (Last time this laptop was on vista).

Boot up like some old grandma. After change from SATA to SSD, old grandma became a sports car.

Boot up from 10 mins or so to booting up within 6 sec and i changed the vista to win 10 as well.

Base on Ngee Ann website too general for Intel based systems for Biz Accountancy. If for Engineering the requirement would be way higher.

With the great feedback from the bros over here. Ended getting an Ideapad S145 frm Challenger and zhng memory to 20 gb. Pretty much decent I guess for that course that would not need much specs even for presentation and the weight just nice for everyday carry for females.

Nowadays, not many people play on PC. Most of them play on mobile, i seen youngsters and kids gather in Mac for royal rumble in mobile almost everyday.

Now the new arcade is in mac or places that allows them free aircon or seats (With free Wifi). Then gather around the table and concentrate on their mobile.

Lan shops or LAN cafe nowadays are more for ah tiong.

Based on information in NP website, somewhere within the Models for Purchase, here is the minimum and recommended for Diploma in Accountancy,

Processor - Intel Core i5 4xxx or equivalent (Intel i7 recommended)
RAM - 8GB (16GB recommended)
Storage - 256GB

Is your Idealpad S145 comparable in the processor?

I5 1062, this model is only 5 months old according to processor release date from Intel. I don’t expect they do heavy number crunching compare to engineering unless things changed a lot there the last 35 years.

Not much. Perhaps the trend now maybe to learn analytics using R or Python but that’s not intensive.

i do have an aftershock laptop that can be charged by usb c. but note that charging by usb will always be slower even if the charging capacity is over 100W

Do you have any specifications for the Lenovo?

It’s a matter of Academic discipline. A gaming laptop works well in most polytechnic applications primarily due to better cooling (over extended periods of operation), a wider / bigger screen and in-built processing prowess.

I am currently in the field of data science / machine learning and deep learning. So I do appreciate something with more oomph for on the go model training.

Doesn’t hurt having some downtime to play games. A downside of getting a gaming laptop might be weight and bulk. Battery life, being lower, will hurt as well.

do you think the lenovo is more worth it because i feel like if i get a gaming laptop ill be too distracted hahah

problem is for the same price i can get a 120hz display from aftershock

Could you advise if the following is good enough for DS/ML?

I am also considering Yoga S740 (15") with Intel Core i9-9880H Processor from Lenovo website.

Which is a better choice that can last a longer period without being obsolete?

The school is offering the following.

Iron Grey 81RS009XSB
Lightweight, Powerhouse

• 10th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-1065G7 Processor
(1.3 GHz, 8M Cache, Up to 3.9 GHz)
• Windows 10 Home
• 16GB RAM; max.16GB
• 512GB M2 PCIE SSD
• NVIDIA® GeForce® MX250 GDDR5 2GB
• 14” FHD (1920 x 1080) IPS 400 Nits
• WiFi 6 (2x2 802.11ax) Wireless with Bluetooth 4.2
• Dolby Atmos Speaker System
• 3 Years On-site Warranty
Free 1TB Ext HDD, Headset, Mouse, Backpack, Lenovo Travel Hub, Notebook Lock

Graphics card is the most important, you need a better card, maybe gtx 1660 or rtx series.

I think the aftershock Forge 15 Pro with rtx 2060 max-p or apex 15 lite will be good for that.

For deep and machine learning, a laptop is not the right medium for training of artificial neural network models. That said, a GTX will perform better than the Nvidia MX.

Ideally you should use TPUs found in school servers / Super computers

However, a gaming laptop like an Aftershock or ROG with extended warranties will suit your needs well.

Ahh okay,, but if i do get the lenovo with MX im able to still so web dev and use for computing with ease right.. currently weight is important as my travel to school is very far and the lenovo has a good build quality

I do understand the need for a good gpu tho, i went aftershock just now but the apex 15 lite didnt feel quite light
