I currently have a singtel 2G prepaid SIM card. Just wanna ask if it's possible to change to a 3G SIM card if I port the number to another telco .

Or i still need to get a new number

Sorry Sir/Mdm, we are unable to retain your current Prepaid mobile number if you like to switch to a 3G SIM card. A new 3G SIM with a different mobile number will have to be purchased.

think u walk in to the new teleco customer service center to ask?

i suspect during the process of buying the new sim card at the new teleco, if its 3g enable, it just overlap ur old number onto this sim.

judging for the link, its due to the fact the person is holding a 2G sim card, so they cant do conversion. so maybe at the point of purchase, ur card is 3G enable already then it should be an issue. (base on the sim card issue by the new teleco)

dun worry, frm what i know, starhub meant to say they dun issue 2G cards anymore.
last yr i hv actually converted a very old singtel's pre-paid number to starhub's pre-paid.

however, from what i know, only Singtel can do it now.

which means these M1's pre-paid mobile numbers hv to convert to Singtel's pre-paid plan 1st.

U can always jump ship back to SH, if no need sign contract with ST or when contract expired.

3mth minimum contract for postpaid plan =)

so base on this trick, just port prepaid to singtel as prepaid/convert to postpaid.
use for 3mth then port back starhub as postpaid.

Well, since I started this thread..Just wanted to share and update what I eventually did.

Originally had singtel 2g SIM card, and like you also finds that gprs is too slow for me. Then I ported the singtel number to starhub prepaid and purchased their 3g SIM card. So now im getting better speed with 3g.

If you are considering porting your prepaid number to starhub i suggest going to their official starhub shops and not their "exclusive retailer". cause i went to these retailers shop and they outright say its not possible to port between prepaid and prepaid only postpaid to postpaid so they claim. Also just in case, bring along the person that registered the SIM card you now have even though it is stated in starhub FAQ it is not necessary.

So in conclusion, it is theoretically possible to change from prepaid singtel 2g to 3g though not directly (I think)

For me, I think i'll stick with starhub for now unless singtel has per second billing implemented

Unfortunately the telcos here are a bit behind the times. It is unthinkable that in Europe you wouldn't be able to go from prepaid to postpaid, or even port your number from postpaid to say prepaid at another operator. Same for changing SIM cards (to MicroSIM for instance), in Singapore you cannot change or replace a prepaid SIM. In Europe you walk in and walk out with a new SIM, same if you lose your prepaid SIM and it's registered in your name. No problem.

As mentioned, you cannot replace a SIM within the same operator in Singapore, so if you want to go from 2G to 3G then you need to "jump" to another operator first, and then port your number back.

I recently ported from Starhub to Singtel because I needed a MicroSIM and I had an old SIM that might have been ruined if I tried to "cut" it. Starhub said "no way to change" so I moved to Singtel. Stupid way to lose a customer.

Not sure if I'll move back. Per second billing and the new data packages (500mb or 1gb valid for 30 days) are very good at Starhub, and I think their free international calls have slightly better voice quality. But I think Singtel has the best internet, though it's annoying to have to renew the 7-day packages. Not sure what they mean when something expires say on 13 Jan, does that mean midnight from 12 to 13 Jan or midnight from 13 to 14 Jan?

Thanks a lot for the feedback guys..So in conclusion I can change my Singtel prepaid 2g sim to 3g sim through 2 times of jumping rite?
anyway,the data packets of singtel is cheaper than starhub for sure but no idea about the speed.
Singtel offers the 7 days 1giga data packets for 7 dollar and 7 days 10mb data packets for 1 dollar..So for 1 month u just need to subscribe the 7 dollar at the beginning and the next 3 weeks subscribe the 1 dollar, cause the unused data packet will be accumulated if you subscribe to the new data packets within the 7 days. So, 1 months will only cost 7+1+1+1=10 dollar and maybe u will pay only 14 dollar for 2 months depening on the usage of your 1 giga data packets..
Meanwhile for starhub (1month 500mb for 15 dollars and 1giag for 20 dollars)..hehehe

That's for the price issue..meanwhile for the speed issue i have no idea as i nvr use starhub one b4..any idea about that guys?

Yes, you will need to move away from Singtel to change to a 3G card. You can just make one move and stay with Starhub, or make a second move if you wish to return to Singtel.

I previously wrote that Singtel has better internet, but this seems to depend on the day. I just make a test again (two identical phones, held in each hand, in an area where both networks have a strong signal) and Starhub came out much better.

Since you need to make one move anyway and it involves purchasing a new SIM card from Starhub (they will move your old number to it so no need to "search" for a nice number on the SIM), you might as well stay with them for a month and check them out.

I think their free IDD calls have better quality, plus you get per-second billing, loads of free SMS with each topup, and you only need to think about topping up your internet once a month as opposed to every week.

The downside is that when you make your first call of the day with Starhub, you automatically get this annoying voice message about your balance, card validity, etc. So you always have to hang up straight away and call again. I wish there was a way to switch this off permanently...

After being with Singtel for a very short period of time I think I will port back to Starhub.

Per-second billing is the global norm and it's surprising that I can only get it on Starhub prepaid.

On top of that, I prefer buying an internet add-on once a month rather than once a week.

Thirdly, although Starhub internet can be slow at times (= inconsistent), it has been much better than Singtel at other times. Plus I'm seeing that Singtel dumps me out of 3G extremely often and in many places, whereas when I instantly check the other phone it still picks up Starhub 3G.

Time to move back to Starhub I think.

Currently on singtel im using the hot 55 since sometimes i need to make international call..wondering starhub's service for this kind of service is as cheap and as good as singtel?

it's coz my aunt who have returned to her country gave me her prepaid number as she doesn't need it anymore. i just wonder if it's possible.
