You should install OEM drivers for certain functions like Power Management which may help. Like Lenovo has some Thinkpad functions to enable battery management or Fujitsu has Eco function to save battery. You should be able to use the Win7 version unless the OEM say cannot.

Not a good solution as it messes with the default language for non-Unicode programs...

Just name anything on the desktop with Chinese characters. (You can create a blank text file or folder... anything works)

What u mean by this? I cant type chinese wordings ma... :)

Win 8 unable to boot

Hi, firstly to qualify I am a PC idiot. Know only very basic knowledge. On Yesterday I have acquired an Acer Aspire V5 touch(M1 Promo) and meddled with the msconfig-boot- and I checked the box under 'PCI LOCK'.

The nightmare begins and the best, I didnt create any recovery usb/cd/dvd from it.

My Win 8 64bit unable to boot since then. It will goes into self diagnosis mode again and again. I went to recovery mode"
Troubleshoot, refresh PC,Reset PC,advance option, unable to go safe mode, I have no idea what to key in command prompt as well. It is driving me crazy for few hours..and to no avail.

What do you bros and gurus think? The main culprit is the checking of PCI Lock? Any way to reverse it? The big issue now I am unable to get into Windows mode.

I went BIOS mode also dont know what to do. I did download a 3.3GB 90 days Win 8 ISO, save it onto my usb Thumbdrive and burned it into a DVD and hoping it may revive my lappy by the booting option, only proved to be fruitless.

Before turning to Acer service centre, any kind soul may share and give me advice?

Thanks......

PCI Lock..argh...........

Have you tried reset or refresh your PC?

PCI Lock prevents Windows from reallocating I/O Addresses & IRQ for your motherboard & hardware which can stop Windows from Booting properly especially if you're using AHCI or any hardware that needs remapping of these hardware resources.

I don't know how to uncheck PCI Lock from the command prompt so all I can say is to reinstall Windows 8 (System Reset). Previously, there's a Boot from Last Known Good Configuration but it's disabled by default in Win8.

Maybe someone else can help?

Hi bro,by taking note my posting and replying my post is a form of great help...did tried refreshed but couldn't proceed further as i deemed by checking PCI Lock is as good as annihilate the boot up system as you have mentioned.

Anyway, spoken to Acer and i think i have to pay a visit to them. A painful lesson, but valuable at the same time. Thanks onc again...

No problem bro. Actually I've been thinking about the problem.

the PCI LOCK setting should be in the UEFI Bootloader for Win8. So should be able to use bcdedit command in recovery mode command prompt but since you're not a technical user, bring it to Acer.

Anyone got problems using camera app? I get this error message "Sorry. The camera app can't be used with this version of windows"

I tried the following (info obtained from microsoft community help site) but still not working.

1) check "device manager". My camera is listed in "imaging device"
2) In the camera app "settings" option, in "permission" option, the "webcam and microphone" is turned ON.

3) Did "hardware troubleshooting".

I was using YouCam in Windows 7. Upon upgrading to windows 8, I downloaded USB2.0 UVC camera from Lenovo website which stated it is compatible with windows 8.

Help??

You may need to uninstall the Youcam software but keep the driver. I think you need Twain drivers for this to work.

Hi Sanfong,

You can boot to Safe Mode (Windows Startup Settings) and check if the issue presists over there.
Click here to know more about how to get to Windows Startup Settings screen in Windows 8.

Hope we help.
