Problem/s with Win8 - Post Here !

Dear all,

I have a problem shutting down on my desktop and laptop. Both w8 machines. Deskie's problem doesnt seem to be so often, but it happens to the laptop quite frequently.

Desktop's a custom assembles pc, laptop's acer aspire s3 ultrabook. Both upgraded from windows 7.

Any suggestions and feedback is welcome and much appreciated.

It helps my Desktop shutdown MUCH faster.

For laptop, I recommend ensuring your BIOS is up to date. Not sure how Acer implements UEFI but make sure you have all the drivers & Acer software updated to Windows 8 version if available. If Windows 8 version isn't available, make sure to REINSTALL the Windows 7 version since you've upgraded from Windows 7.

Many OEM software hook into the system so I usually recommend to do clean-install especially for laptops.

Since i upgraded to Win 8 mine has been having issue. Especially when i do complete shutdown, when i boot up, network cannot detect at all and i need to off/on my router. My other wireless device dun have such problems.

Make sure your laptop network NIC drivers are updated. Use the OEM version instead of the laptop manufacturer's version.

Also make sure your router's firmware is updated especially if yours is a wireless-N router from many years ago.

You need to update the network drivers and try connecting to LAN after updating. Let us know if it works.

Admin account cannot change

I have accidenly changed guest local acc from std to admin; and my microsoft acc changed from Admin to Std. Now the problem no matters how I try, Guest local wouldn't change from Admin to Std; my Microsoft acc cannot change back to admin. pls help!!!!!!

Make sure your laptop network NIC drivers are updated. Use the OEM version instead of the laptop manufacturer's version.

Also make sure your router's firmware is updated especially if yours is a wireless-N router from many years ago.

Mine is desktop hehehe. I tried both Windows update driver and D-link drivers. None worked. Router is the F-up Huawei by M1, i dunno where to look for firmware and i tried looking long time ago, it was nowhere to be found.

Dlink? You're using a USB Network adaptor? If you are, uninstall completely before reinstall. Dlink USB NIC always have stability issues. But once connected, they are very stable compared to other brands.

Use the Dlink drivers. You may need to set All of the Dlink services to Automatic startup (without delay). Also, Win8 drivers are not out so you may want to email their tech support & see if they have beta Win8 drivers.

I've done that already. Only thing, like you mentioned cos of the Win8 drivers. I have always love D-link stuff, never had problems with their products. For this i can't help but blame Windows 8 cos i have USB ports issue too. I did some stuff that helped so far but it's not 100% reliable cos there will come a time when my USB wouldn't start on first boot so none of my USB device would work and this will go on for a few days to a couple of weeks and then miraculously it will work again without any Windows update and i did nothing unusual. So it's all a --->

OK, for desktop, you may need to email tech support for your mobo. My Gigabyte mobo with Etron USB 3 controller had compatibility issue with Win8 Hyper-V.

I emailed Gigabyte & they emailed me a beta BIOS which solved the problem.

Remember that Win8 use UEFI instead of BIOS to boot & older mobos may not have the necessary BIOS extensions. This was 1 month after Win8 launch & till now my USB3 gave me no problems. Kudos to Gigabyte!

In BIOS, you can also try to toggle Legacy USB device support or toggle USB Power on support which affects when the NIC is switched on which may help your situation.

OK my mobo dun have Win 8 drivers though. I'll email and ask, never thought about that haha.

Sure no problem. If you're referring to mobo (chipset) drivers, go download the intel ones.
