Singapore - Engagement rings

Hi there,

I'm a Kiwi - recently engaged and looking out for my engagement ring (my lovely boyfriend/fiancee proposed with a wedding band so that I can pick out the ring).

One of our options is to look for and purchase a ring in Singapore when we travel there in April.

This thread is amazing, thank you all for your comments.
Would it be reasonable to get something in the $3.5k range from JannPall? I am more concerned about quality than size - I'd be happy with a low set, 0.4 carat (or below!) solitaire, or a ring with a central diamond and smaller pear shaped diamonds to the side (but that may be out of the price range). I'd like D-G colour, excellent or very good cut and clarity of SI or above.
Would that be at all likely?

My other option is to buy in NZ but get 15% off (GST component).

Thank you all, you are geniuses at this!

For Singapore, JannPaul got to be one of the better private jeweler you can find. If there is any shop in NZ that is reputable with reasonable price diamonds, it might be cheaper since it's 15% off. Singapore will only return 7% for your GST.

If you are really interested in JannPaul, I think you should contact them prior to your trip unless you are able to stay long enough to wait for your diamond to be set.

Below S$1,000 to above S$50,000.

Your question is just like, "What's the price range of a motor vehicle like?". You need to be more specific. ;)

There is no obligations to buy at JP, so just go book an appointment and learn more about diamonds. :)

thanks for your advice
just realize i asked a dumb qn ! haha.
:)
did u buy from JP too? how was your experience?

My experience was great, which translated to me being their customer. :)

Prior to JP, I have been to all those other shops that you can name. Also looked out for those warehouse sales and went down to most of them to have a look.

My g/f really like the iconic Brilliant Rose ring that you see at all Soo Kee outlets. I checked out the price and that particular design is only available for Brilliant Rose diamonds' size above 0.7ct. I asked for the price for one of the ring on display, it was a whopping S$26k, can't exactly what was the carat size but it was displayed at Parkway Parade's outlet.

This obviously was outta my budget, so I decided to do more homework and went online to read more about diamonds. It was mind grueling to understand every aspect of diamonds, especially the Cut because a Triple Excellent may not be a good diamond as well.

Luckily I chanced upon some threads recommending JP, so I PM one of the HWZer to get the contact for JP and made an appointment. I guess my appointment made quite an impression on Paul because there was a total of 6 pax. He mentioned that he had never encountered such a big group in a single appointment. :s13:

My first appointment was a good 2.5 hours and it could have been longer if my carpark coupon haven't expire. =:p

Paul manage to show everything that I read and tried to understand for weeks in that 2.5 hours session. In the end we left without buying anything and there was no mention that we would ever return yet he was all smiles. (it's amazing coz he had to serve 6 customers and walked in and out, to and fro, to show us all the different type of good & bad diamonds under all the different lighting including outside the shop).

I guess it was after a good 2 months before I made a second appointment with Paul. He was able to come up with unique ring designs (computer generated) based on our requirements. He was also kind enough to send some of the scope images of diamonds which matches the 4Cs I have indicated. From the pictures, I manage to shortlist two that I liked and it was the third or fourth appointment that I went down to see both diamonds before confirming the one I wanted.

Service is great, email response was fast if he's in SG and most of all price is competitive. I am sure everyone would want to stretch their dollar to the max. :)

thanks bro. so i assume definitely will be cheaper then singapore right?

Depending on product type. For diamonds, you gotta know your 4Cs very well and check the local prices and compare with similar specs 4Cs to make a fair comparison.

Btw, I believe for diamonds, they easily pass S$1k and when you come back, GST applies. But then again, it's easy for you to "ahem".

to add on:
The biggest factor to JP is that they only keep the best cut diamonds.
Which means that any size color or clarity, you will only be looking be at the best cut quality possible... check the scopes when they show you and you'll know what i mean.
When searching for diamonds through online websites, you're limited to sub par cut, and if you find a kind of decent cut, it will be in the desired range of other 3C's.

Not to mention they are the only ones that has Solasfera... and what i got..the Cushion Brellia.

Yea, I got the Cushion Brellia too. It's really cute and you can really see the H&As. :)

In the past, I thought only round diamonds could have H&As, that is until I saw the Cushion Brellia.

hi guys,

i just spent the past 2 hrs reading the part 1 and realised most of you guys recommended JP.
Im in the US working now and will be back in may, and im planning to buy a proposal ring. my dilemma is if i should buy here from WF/BN since im here.

What do you guys think? shld i wait to get back in singapore? i visited a few diamond shops and have concluded the cut is definately the deal breaker.. i would definately go for the best cut and lesser on the other Cs. My budget is about 7 -8k.. im willing to stretch alittle.

What would you guys recommend??

thanks guys.

There is no such grade right? Not sure u if u are emphasizing the positives or being sacarstic here..

I hope you meant "yes, they are super ideal diamonds." =:p

Can someone help me with my question?
Thx!

Cheers!

JP's diamonds are in the super ideal range. I think he/she is trying to emphasize that it's really the better ones among the super ideal range.

If you are not convinced just looking at the GIA/AGS cert, you can even request for the scope pics or even go down to the shop to view the actual diamonds under the different scopes for yourself. :)

JP is the only shop I have been to that offers view under different scopes.

For a big purchase such as this, take your time to decide. Yes, a trip to JP will your diamond selection exercise much easier even if u do not decide to buy from them (because of the knowledge gained).

erm... i am a bit displeased with JP.
but shall comment on that later on.....

ok... time to update.

i remember when i first visited JP i asked them abt full eternity mini solasfera wedding band and was told it is expensive and not worth to it get, thus i went to another private jewel (XXX) and look around it happen that they do have what i want and i go ahead to place order and paid deposit.

to ease my curiosity and everything, i email JP to quote me the same ring and Jann replied me. To my "horror", the price is around the same but with better diamonds grades.

fast forward - after few calls with Paul and Jann, they explained is miscommunication so and so... thus i cancel my order with (XXX) and changed my deposit to something else...

last weekend i finalise my e-ring setting and wedding band design with JP.
i am happy to be able to get a better wedding band with JP, but i also spent extra due to miscommunication which makes me heart pain.

for mini diamonds (0.04) i really can see the H&A!! so cute!!! :s13:

Did you mean other private jeweler got mini solasfera??

So probably with the 'extra fee" + JP's price still cheaper than that private jeweler's price. haha

no.. only JP has solasfera... and total i am paying more.

the private jewel is using normal loose disamonds. with F/G colour, VS clarity.
JP mini solasfera is D,E,F color, VVS grade

mine is 3/4 eternity, as full eternity cannot resize ring.

so for my ring size + no of qty x ct of mini solasferas is less than $2.5k
the private jewel cost $2k - paid 1k deposit.
