have been looking around for a proposal ring, however i am stuck between buying from a private jeweller or from LeeHwa, Soo Kee, Larry, L&C.

I remember one of our friends gathering years back, one of my friend commented on the other friend's wife diamond ring praising that her ring looks big. But when he asked her whether is that a Destinee or Brilliant rose.. she said its a custom made from a private jeweller in Far East shopping mall. Then my other friend say, orh no brand one ah and then sudden there was a moment of silence and weird atmosphere follows.

Now i am in delimma whether i should get a 0.7+ct from private jeweler or only a 0.4+ct from Destinee/Brilliant Rose based on my budget of $4-5k, afraid my future wife will face above such situation in future if i go for the first option.

E VVS2 is the top 2 Color and Clarity.. so it should be more more.. JP is the only one in SG that have the Solasfera.. but they are very reasonably priced for their quality..
Usually for exclusive cuts, they are priced way much higher in a branded store..

i think as long as she is happy, what ever people say, i believe she won't be affected whatsoever.
The foolish ones are the people that only know the brands that they see at bus stop advertisements.:s8:

I think there's a huge misconception with going branded or private.. Basically, you're paying alot more for a diamond, just to say "it's a Destinee". But that doesn't automatically translate to its a "better diamond". They don't use any scopes to see the diamond... What happens if your future wife wears a "branded" 0.4ct diamond and compares it with her friend who has an 0.7ct "unbranded" diamond, which costs the same price but more sparkly? I think that would even be more embarrassing..

Actually is quite simple to choose...

if private jewelry can give a better diamond with lower price... why need to buy Destinee or Brilliant rose?

Those people that make comment like "no brand"... are those people that doesn't have knowledge in diamond...

branded jewelry shop not necessary has a better diamond than private jewelry shop. If you talking about 57 facets diamonds, it is a common diamond that can get in all jewelry stores... example, buying 1 carat 57 facets diamond at Lee Hwa cost you $15k, buy from private jewelry shop cost you $12k. Both are GIA certify diamond... why paying additional few thousand just for a brand name?

For me... i will want to pay to get the best diamond i can with my budget... i will not care about brand.
When you go oversea to US or Europe, will people know what is Destinee? What is Brilliant rose? Will they know who is Lee Hwa, who is SK?

People only will ask what is the 4C not the brand.

Hope what i think is correct. I am not expert, that is just my view.

The fren who only know destinee is a noob lah. If she feel very proud that her diamond is a destinee, i will honestly laugh my socks off because there are much higher end diamonds than those. Lazare. De Beers.

Exactly!! Paying more for a GIA certifcate I can understand... but more for just the branding.. I cannot... When a girl wears a diamond ring, you won't be able to tell what "brand" is the diamond or which shop you bought it from... but you can certainly tell how sparkly it is :)

wwwwwQ: Doubt u can get a 0.4-0.5carat for around 4-5k for the Destinee Royale or the Brilliant Rose. I recently asked a 0.5plus carat Brilliant Rose costing excess 8k.

Your budget definitely possible if you aim for a Solasfera.

Regards to your dilemma, I think its really impt to know what your paying for in order to appreciate what you have. Take a look at the comparison below:-

Normal Brilliant Round: 57 facets, hearts and arrows.
Brilliant Rose: 66 facets, no hearts and arrows (Also known as the Leo Diamond in the states)
Destinee Royale: 81 facets, 10 hearts and 10 arrows
Solasfera: 91 facets, 10 hearts and 10 arrows

Actually, its not how much facets u have on the diamond but the symmetry of the cutting which in this case with 91 facets, the Solasfera still has very minimal or none light leakages which makes it sparkles.

So I guess you just pay for the name only if you go branded.. not so much on the cut and quality. If "face" is an issue, definitely go branded. :D

Did anyone customized this design here? I'm drooling over this..... =:p

IMO, if you see this diamond ring on the street, there's no way I can tell the brand just by looking at it..

kimmjio,

i like your comment.
:)
You miss one point other than face issue. If someone is rich, they can go for branded because they don't mind paying for the name. But ultimately for rich man, they want to buy "face" too...

Well, after speaking to my colleagues, realized they emphasize more on the carat and price. So...it was worthless comments. ><

Had gone to Yuen Tung and Citigem to find out the approx price for a similar diamond. Yuen Tung quoted a few hundred lower but the HCA was in the range of 3 to 5...Citigem cost a few hundred more but I'm not even sure if the quality is there since the ring is mounted and I can't view the H&A.

Shall wait and see the results. Bet JP is monitoring this thread a lot. Haha.

The best thing about private jeweler is the ability to customize the ring to your specs. I think there are some rings from JP that has the initials of the couple as the ring itself.

If money is not an issue, you can even get rare coloured diamonds (not stones) and set them however you want it.

If your ring design is one and only one, it's difficult to compare. Your friend could have countered, "No wonder your ring looks so familiar, it's from XXX. The auntie living next to me has it but her diamond made the ring looks better because of the bigger carat."

Depends on the design you want and if the online store has the design you want.. and whether you know her ring size or not... Resizing might be an extra cost again.

Emerald cut might be extra tricky to buy online as they have a wide range of length to width ratio... So some might look too long or too short... Need to consider the step cuts too.. Cos some is too thick, some is too thin... I considered getting an emerald cut before too :)

thanks jhchoo85, yup so that's why i thought and decided that getting a local jeweller to set would be better.

i'm thinking of those "rectangular" emerald cut rather than those "square" cut.

any advice on what would be good selection of EM cut?
