You'll be paying more for the branding.. I know for the price, you can get a 0.8ct+ diamond with Jann Paul?? In Charlotte, you can only get around 0.5ct? And that doesn't guarantee you it's a better diamond.

They only have Facebook and blog

Paul Hung

You can safely say that they have the best quality diamonds since they seem to be the only one actively promoting the Ideal, Aset and H/A scope to see the quality of the diamond.

Yeah, they do custom setting too.. Haven't you seen the custom designs posted from other members previously?! :lick:

Hi all.. I started looking around a diamond ring recently and just want to share my experience.. It's actually going to be part of my blog to share but thought I'd just contribute some of my experience and raise some awareness.

So far I've been checking the main brands around the island..

Lee Hwa (Bishan)
The sales person wasn't knowledgeable and couldn't answer my questions.
He knew how to explain briefly about the carat, color and clarity and that was it. Did not know what is "Fluorescence" on the certificate..
He kept refering to the brochure to sell the diamond.. If I wanted to know more, I might as well read the brochure myself.

I saw the normal 57 facets diamond in Lee Hwa and it doesn't look good. It doesn't stand out.

The Destinee (their signature 57 facets) and Destinee Royale (91 facets) diamond looks good. Can see the difference in the diamond against their normal ones.
But the prices will give you a heart attack.

Was qouted Destinee Royale 0.68 G VS1 for $13k

They provide the Hearts and Arrows scope to see. However, you can only see the arrows since the diamond is already set on the ring.

Soo Kee (Harbour Front)
Their main selling point is their Brilliant Rose. The salesperon was pushing Brilliant Rose diamond alot. She explained that it has a rose cutting which is very unique.
One interesting thing they did was to put a 57 facet diamond next to the Brilliant rose (66 facets) to compare. I could see a big difference in the diamond. The Brilliant rose wins the the 57 facets.
Buttt... when I asked more about the normal diamond that was used to compare with the Brilliant Rose.. she started to fumble...
1) The 57 facet was only a Very Good cut, compared to the Excellent cut of the Brilliant Rose
2) I asked if I could see the 57 facets with the hearts and arrows scope which they obliged. Just as I suspected, the hearts and arrows of the diamond was very bad.

I find that this wasn't a fair comparison. A lousy 57 facets was used to compare with their diamond, which would naturally lose out.
In terms of pricing, the Brilliant Rose is priced very high.

Was qouted Brilliant Rose 0.54 F VVS1 for $7.8k

I went back to do more research and discovered that the Brilliant Rose has another name!! It's was previously known as the Leo Diamond. Apparently its the same cut, but Soo Kee calls it the Brilliant Rose and in the USA, its called the Leo Diamond.
Plus the Leo diamond is actually cheaper. So what you're paying for the Brilliant Rose is more for the branding... although I don't think Soo Kee is a "good brand" in the first place.

Service-wise, was slightly better than most of the other retailers.. more friendly.

Citigem (Marina Bay)
Out of all the shops I've been to, Citigem salesperson was the least knowledgeable...
I couldn't really make out what he was saying... All I remember was him telling me that "the most important is color, not cut, color or clarity". He further explained, "this is because the first thing you see in the diamond is the color and not the cut.... "
But doesn't brilliance and fire of the diamond to do with Cut?!

The diamonds from Citigem were very average.. They carry GIA certificates and have diamonds of their own certificate.
They were pushing for the diamonds that were not GIA certified. It was very cheap... A 0.8ct was about $4k?? But you can immediately tell that there is a lack of sparkle and its a very yellow diamond.
So I didn't bother spending much time there..

Taka Jewelry
Spent less than 5 minutes in the store.
Sales person almost and zero knowledge about diamonds and they don't carry any scopes.
Anyway, I think Taka is more known to have the cheapest and lowest quality diamonds. Just went there to have a quick look to confirm this..

I still have more shops to visit but it would take some time since i can only recky during weekends.. will update more later~

Good catch on the Brilliant rose comparison.. Would like to know more of what you think on the destinee royale.. It's 81 facets with 10 hearts and arrows.. The Solasfera from JP is 91 facets 10 hearts and arrows. When you compare the prices, the Solasfera is alot cheaper even though it has 10 facets more.

unlike you...i was very turned off by Sookee staff... my experience there was horrendous...
the sales girl kept dragging me on telling me that a particular diamond which was not even in store is a very good buy...... got me really cranky as i did not even get to see it and was asked to place a deposit...

my personal thoughts on Destinee royal is that it appears to be very messy, not too sure if it is because of the store lighting or not.. when compared with Solasfera, even though it has more facets... i can see that it is clearly defined...

Personally, I agree on what you've shared as my experience with them were very similar to yours.
I don't feel comfortable buying from someone with almost zero diamond knowledge.

Does your girlfriend like with side diamonds? If she does, you don't have much of a choice :s13: I know mine likes side diamonds.. Whats your design?

It's the video that shows you the different stages your ring goes through. I'm still waiting for my design from Jann.. very excited to see what he comes out with..

This is a very cool idea!

I was almost sold by the Brilliant rose when I saw the comparison.. luckily i did further checks :s13: I thought the Destinee royale was very bling and colorful. It would have been one of my top few choice if its not for the astronomical price. I haven't seen the Solasfera yet (only the website). Is Jann Paul the only shop which has it?

unlike you...i was very turned off by Sookee staff... my experience there was horrendous...

My experience with Sookee was not too bad.. She was friendly to me and showing my how good the Brilliant rose is.. until I questioned more about the other comparison diamond :s13:

Now that you mention store lighting I do recall all shops using strong lighting.. Of course this would make a diamond shine more and even the lousy one sparkle. Then again, this is what they want.. after all, they are all trying to sell you their diamonds right?

Personally, I agree on what you've shared as my experience with them were very similar to yours.

I would say most salesperson are there to sell you the diamond.. 80% is sales talk and 20% is diamond knowledge. You don't want to spend thousands of dollars with someone who doesn't know their product.. if theres something wrong with the diamond they also wont tell you..

Hahaha.. I don't think everyone has a spare vernier caliper lying around :s13:
Easiest way is to just use string and tie around her finger.. or if you can.. "borrow" one of her rings =:p

Received the 3D design of my ring :D

Super satisfied with service of JP. They have been very patient and friendly with me.

Jann was explaining to me that for 4 prongs settings, you can see more of the diamonds and it won't cover it too much. The only request I had for him was to make the prongs clock shape (like 12, 3, 6, 9 o'clock) becos my gf prefers it.
We wanted the ring to look cute with some sort of flowery patterning but didn't want it to look too cliche. We've seen lots of flowery or petal prongs design when diamond shopping around but most of them looks over the top and too much... We realize that most flowery design rings have very thick and chunky prongs which makes the setting look too complicated. We also gave up on this idea until Jann showed us this design which we are very happy with. The prongs are still thin and sleek but have a rose petal shape.. Love the simplicity...

My only concern is the rose gold on the prongs. Should I do it in rose of white gold? Or do the whole ring in rose gold? Rose gold seems more special but I don't want to ruin the whole look. I requested another one in white gold.

Oh yeah, and it is with side diamonds. I prefer it without side diamonds to keep it more simple... but gf wants said she wants her big diamond to have little friends to keep it accompany..... so bo pian...

Need Help..

I bought a diamond from Bluenile, 0.45 carat D SI1. Cut is Excellent, Polish is Excellent, Symmetry is Excellent.

Before I bought it, the customer service from Bluenile told me that the diamond is eye clean. When the diamond arrived, there were small blackish dots near the middle of the diamond . At first I thought I can stand it.. but the more I look at it now, the more obvious and it is. Can't tolerate it anymore... What I can't handle is the diamond does not sparkle ever though it has Excellent Cut/Polish/Symmetry. We compared the diamond with other friends and find that the diamond loses out.. and theirs is not even a Excellent Cut!

Now I don't know what to do with the ring. Wanted to return it but it's past the return date policy.. Does anyone know where I can try selling it??
