is it a must to buy a engagement ring 4 times of a guys income?

Noooo. That's not true! My fiance told me she'll kill me if I had spent a lot on the engagement ring as there are many things to pay for during the wedding. She always says my money is her money T_T

Set a budget that is comfortable for you, don't overstretch. If you have lots of budget, just find the diamond size that looks good on her fingers. Not too small or too big.

I think its expected in some more traditional cultures (I know my Myanmar friends have high standards) but my ring was just 1x monthly income. I considered a more expensive one (myself chipping in) but didn't want to overreach on a ring and cry if it gets lost/damaged

If it's a surprise for GF, I think 1.5 or 2 months is safe, 1 month could seem a little cheap (depends on GF). Most girls won't want more than 3 months ba...

Btw, I recently reset my ring from a solitaire to a higher cathedral setting and just received it this morning.

I think it's just a raise of 2mm height, but my diamond looks much bigger in the new setting and the height makes the sparkles more obvious too. Highly recommend new buyers to consider a cathedral setting! 😊

Actually I don’t think the amount of months matter much. It’s more of the size, average engagement size in SG is around 0.5-.0.7, as Long within this range, it should be fine for most average employee. If you’re someone who earns above average income, can consider 1 CT-ish.

I know a lot people who makes 10-30k monthly, but definitely don’t see them spending more than 15-20k (around 1CT-1.3 range)

Hope this works:

You can see that the culet is higher in the right hand side picture. I think this is a cost effective way to make your diamond look about 0.10ct larger, and imo more elegant/"bridal" too. I changed my setting as I felt my setting was too alterative and not very bridal..and the rose gold didn't grow on me as well, lol.

The second obvious point is less prongy look = easier to see the sparkles/ glow haha.

However 4 prongs make the diamond look quite square, even so for my stone which is 6.8mm (already not very small). At arm's length it does look more cushiony. But overall for the elegant side view and larger look, I love my setting.

Actually many jewellery stores like SK, Soo Kee, Goldheart, Lee Hwa sell 95% cathedral designs and now I can see why.

Nice! For the square look, perhaps next time you can consider rotating the 4 prongs by 45 degrees and it will retain the round look!

It looks really high from the photo, will you feel any discomfort or inconvenience when wearing it?

Haha nope no discomfort at all. I saw the NSEW prongs too but in the usual side view, there will be 1 prong smack in the middle of the diamond instead which I don't prefer, and that design is harder to stack with larger wedding bands. There are pros and cons of each design and overall I like mine quite a lot already :)

Second this! Marketing has been the driving force on creating this "norm" for a dude to spend 2,3 or even 4x of his salary on engagement ring.
It's the sincerity that counts. Plus, other wedding expenses probably would create a hole in your wallet such as si dian Jing, suits, gown, pre wedding photos, actual day photography and actual day videography.

I had a hard time choosing the 4 prongs in either classic orientation or the NSEW orientation and stucked in the shop damn long just to compare and see whichever that looks better on my finger 😂 In the end, I chose the 4 prongs in classic orientation as to which suggested by JP’s staff Joey 😊 And it’s also easier to flush down with the wedding band. I somehow felt that the NSEW orientation doesn’t really look good on my finger maybe cos my fingers are too long? Seems like the classic one look better instead.

You have very nice fingers! I like how it looks when it's stacked with the wedding band. Pretty!

i tried with my finger and my partner finger, she is like 1 or 2 size difference from me... is there any method to get the right fit of the ring?

If u go to the jeweller, they could always size it up.
If it’s a surprise, you could sneak away one of her current rings as a guide.
Not all fingers are also ‘round’ so you might find some gap with rings then there’s also knuckle size. If have slender fingers but a slightly bigger knuckle, you might have to go with a slightly bigger size

Congrats!!

I don't know why, but all the SG retailers have their own size chart. It's not standardized. The best is to ask them to convert to US size for you so that it is easy for you to convey the right size to all retailers.
