Check out Jann Paul, they are pretty popular and known for selling top quality diamonds yet cheaper than usuall mall stores. Call them up and book an appointment before going, they will educate you everything about diamonds and no hard sell. I'll recommend you Casey, pretty friendly guy and he's the guy doing up all the Jann Paul YouTube educational videos on diamond haha :)

thanks for your recommendation. BTW, do you know roughly how much for a 0.5ct, triple ex, hca below 2, f color or above, vs1 and above diamond?

No worries, no matter your budget is 3k or 10k, he will serve you the same :) they are all very professional, and do go ahead let them know your budget and desired diamond specs and they will advise further. Anyway I've sent you an PM - do check it out :)

what is your budget for the 0.5x that you are considering? if you find $4k plus too ex for your budget, can conisder asking JP for their ideal range instead of super ideal.. there are some bros out here who managed to get quite a good deal for diamonds that look almost as good as super ideal ones :) the price difference is quite substantial

hi guys, i am trying to find the 'perfect' diamond for my future wife, but nth is perfect on this world. so how do u guys select the diamond without any post purchase dissonance?

And is there any nice setting to recommend? the only setting I know is Tiffany and Co.

thanks in advance.

'perfect' as you should know by now is a perception in the eyes of the beholder.. the key to not having too much post purchase dissonace is to get the best value diamond for the price you are willing to pay. good thing about JP is that you can reserve the diamond that you want first by placing a deposit.. if subsequently you find a diamond with specs and price you like better, they are quite flexible with you swapping diamonds, as long as you havent given them the go ahead to set it in the ring yet hahaha

Check out White Dwarf as well, went there recently to have a look at their diamonds and they are of similar quality to JP's, price is about 15-20% less in comparison considering the price after setting. Only thing is that they don't have a retail outlet, so it's by appointment only if on weekdays, generally after office hours.

Same deal with JP, you get the whole range of scopes to examine the diamonds with. Can take photos using your phone through the scopes but won't have the glitzy scope images that JP provides.

The major downsides are:
1. WD doesn't accept credit card payment because of the smaller scale, so you lose out on credit card cashback, points or miles.
2. Because of their small scale operations, they do not accept their stones for trade in/upgrade. I think JP will take in their stones at 100% for upgrade, so if your SO is someone that is likely to want to upgrade their engagement ring diamond, that's a big factor to take into account.

In terms of price comparison, which I guess everyone is most interested in, I was looking at a 1.10 G VS2 at JP and 1.10 G VS1 at WD.
Prices:
1.10 G VS2 (JP) - 14300
1.10 G VS1 (WD) - 12600

18K white gold setting is around same price as JP for simple settings. For platinum, WD is about 200-300 cheaper compared to JP.

FYI for those looking for the cheapest available quality 1 carat diamond - I was quoted the following at JP and WD:
Super Ideal 1.02 G VS2 (JP) - 13200
WD 1.01 G VS2 (WD) - 10900

I didn't look at the JP stone because it was reserved by the time I asked to look at it, but did look at the WD stone. The WD stone had arrows that were a tiny bit asymmetrical, but ASET scope performance was equally good as the other JP stones that I've looked at.

Just thought I would provide a review of an alternative. For full disclosure, no affiliation to White Dwarf or JP, just have visited both and had great service at both.

I think you are comparing an ideal cut and super ideal cut. So prices will be different. If the arrows are not symmetrical then I doubt it's a super ideal already.

Larry has the standard EXC x 3 diamonds and their ideal cuts called lazare. Their ideal cuts will be priced higher but they don't use those light scopes to QC. I found JP's super ideal cuts to be cheaper than their ideal cuts. Plus, the quality is assured with the scopes.
