Hi all

I got a somewhat basic question as I'm doing up the network plan for my new place.

1. Netlink fiber point and all the LAN points from the rooms all terminate in my DB closet. Starhub modem is also here
2. I plan to have 2 satellites in 2 other rooms of the unit (Ausu XT8)
3. In the DB closet, I want to use back my AX-55 router, which I plan to link up with the LAN points in the other rooms and also connect with the 2xXT8's via LAN

is this the most optimal setup?

will the AX55 in any way bottleneck the XT8's?

Thanks

No it won't. This is perfect.

This should work.

Just FYI, even though the XT8 is a "high" end mesh solution from Asus, the CPU is actually low end BCM6755 quad core 1.5GHz Arm Cortex A7 CPU, same as the CPU used in RT-AX55.

Whether it is the most optimal is arguable. For one thing that RT-AX55 has only 256MB RAM, if you have many clients, you may want to use RT-AX56U, which has the same CPU but 512MB RAM.

Thank you for the feedback. We prob have 10-15 clients on but the load should be spread among the XT8's as well, right?

Regarding setup, I hook everything up then setup the AX-55 as the main router and the 2xXT8's as the AiMesh sattelites?

I assume your xt8 comes in a pair. Out of the box, both xt8 will pair together automatically. However you need to configure the first xt8 as an aimesh node, den the 2nd xt8 will pair automatically.

These are the steps:
1. Boot up ax55 and set it up in the db box.
2. Boot up 1 xt8 only and set it up as aimesh node.
3. After step 2, power the second xt8 without connecting the Ethernet cable. It will pair wirelessly with the first xt8. After pairing, place at the desired location and connect Ethernet cable to the Wan port.

i am using the XT8 with AX88 for a while. It work well as a mesh setup generally. One thing you can consider is to explore is if you disable the wifi on the AX55 and purely rely on both XT8 wifi mesh setup and see if you have better result ? That is also provided both XT8 is positioned such that they can cover the whole house.

Thanks. I’m actually considering if it will work if I take the AX55 out of the equation as I read that the coverage of the XT8s are 5000sqft. My apartment is 1100 sqft only so maybe 3 devices is overkill? I only thought of this cos the DB closet is next to the bomb shelter which I was afraid would block the signal to 2/3 of the house

I would not connect it (Lan of ax55 to Wan of xt8) until I have completed the set up of xt8.

First enter the xt8 webui (factory reset) and select aimesh ap.

The webui of xt8 should prompt you to enter the ax55 webui and search for compatible aimesh node.

The above are the sub steps to step 2.

I would stick with the configuration wrote in the first post (i.e. 3 devices), and turn of the wifi radio of ax55. Ax55 is only for routing purposes.

Hi all, a follow up question:

For the XT8's I see online there are those available in a pair of white, but most online sellers I see are selling the black. Do you know where I can purchase the set of 2 in white? Thanks

Thanks. And it's a bit cheaper than the black as well. Will try to see if they have on Lazada/Shopee and if there's a good price during 8.8

Since already have the AX55, why not run it as a wireless router in the DB to cover the living room, then add another Asus router further in another room as AIMesh mode to cover the bedrooms?

Hi all
Need advice from the experts here regarding how best to setup all my old Asus routers collected from my M1 contracts through the years.
I have 4 of them
-RT-AC66U
-RT-AC68U
-RT-AC2600
-RT-AX55
Is it possible to use all to set up a combination of router Aimesh and repeater modes to get a better coverage?
Thanks

Only RT-AC68U / RT-AX55 support AiMesh.
RT-AC66U can use as either AP or Repeater
RT-AC2600 only router or AP

On a separate note - I plan to use Asus AIMesh for my new condo unit that is 1250 sqft. Given that I already have wired LAN cables throughout the apartment - will XT8 be overkill? I'm considering XD6 and XD4 since they are considerably cheaper.

if you have lan cable and plan to setup the mesh with LAN overhaul. Than no point spend money on XT8 Tri band. Can consider the cheaper XD mesh.
