On a separate note - I plan to use Asus AIMesh for my new condo unit that is 1250 sqft. Given that I already have wired LAN cables throughout the apartment - will XT8 be overkill? I'm considering XD6 and XD4 since they are considerably cheaper.
You using ONT or ONR?

Any thoughts on 3 x XD4 vs 2 x XD6 for coverage?
3 is always safer. 1 at living room, 1 at MBR, then 1 more in a room with the weakest signal.

It is not just the distance, but the number of walls in between.

It will. But with 5 routers at gigabit LAN, coverage and attenuation will be pretty solid. Unlikely signal strength will go below -60dBm.
With 5 APs, one from each room, of course coverage gao gao!

but for a typical 3BR unit, 3 should be sufficient.

if you have lan cable and plan to setup the mesh with LAN overhaul. Than no point spend money on XT8 Tri band. Can consider the cheaper XD mesh.

Haha after reading this, I'm wondering if my planned setup is overkill using the AX55 + 2x XT8's for my 1100sqft apartment

You may be able to use 2*XD6 instead. Do not go for XD4 due to the lack of LAN ports.

On the other hand, in reality 2*XT8 is not really overkill either if budget allowed.

And depending on the layout of the room and placement, 2*XD6 may or may not be good enough. You might need three units.

Is it recommended to turn on or off the wireless of the AX55 in the DB closet, as the XD6 is of better wireless spec?

and instead of 2 XD6, will it be better to buy another higher spec Asus router To form AiMesh with the AX55?

Thanks will stick to plan and go with the xt8s with the Ax55 as the router with radio turned off. Getting the XT8s as a housewarming gift so might as well haha

Yes it is good to trun off the wifi of the AX55 inside the DB closet.

As for whether a higher spec Asus router is better or not, you need to consider the followng two aspect.
1) higher spec Asus routers (eg: RT-AX86U/RT-AX88U) have higher end CPU which is totally wasted as an AIMesh node now that AX55 is the main router.
2) but yes you can use RT-AX82U as the AP to match XD6 wireless spec, you will probably get better coverage but then the cost may be higher, at least for local version.

Question: Who is the authorised distro/service center for warranty issues for Asus routers in Singapore? Want to check before I purchase online during sales such as 8.8 as there are a lot of sellers and want to be sure I get one with local warranty. Thanks

Actually to be honest I think my current 3 units of askey mesh wifi works very well. Just abit itchy finger to upgrade once I move to a bigger place.
Then try 3 units of AX mesh with Ethernet backhaul as no point getting powerful router since you are stuck with ONR (like me).

Asus : XD4
TP-Link : X20
Orbi : RBK353

Follow up question to my setup. I intend to use an ethernet backhaul from the AX55 to both XT8s.

One of the XT8s is located at my TV console, which I intend to connect via ethernet cable to:
1. My wireless speaker system
2. Samsung Smart TV

However, I also need to connect to my Starhub Fiber box, but I recall that it requires a 1:1 connection from the ONT direct to the box (i.e. cannot connect from ONT>Router>Starhub box). Any way to solve this? I only have 1 ethernet point at that location unfortunately

Yes. You need 2x SG105e managed switch. This will enable the lan point at your tv console to carry both data and tv signal.

I am assuming you have your router is in the db box.

yes, router (AX55) in DB. Assuming that you mean the managed switch will be at the TV console, with one to the Fiber TV box and one to the XT8?
