I went on 2 trips to Taiwan last year and did ask for quotes from some of the 'recommendations' in this thread so I'll just share my experience with them.

The first trip was actually a trip that me and my friends won from a contest. So apparently the agency coordinating the free trip engaged this driver who later on passed me his contact if I ever wanted to go back again. This driver is quite a safe driver and friendly but he is very talkative. He can talk for NON-STOP throughout the car ride so for the 2 days that he was assigned to us, me and my friends took turn to take the front seat so that we can take turns to entertain him. If you are a person who likes to talk, learn about Taiwan history and fun facts, then perhaps you can consider him. Since it was a free trip, I don't know about his rates but you can email/PM him to ask.

Went back the next month but with my family this time. Didn't contact the driver above because my family appreciate peace and tranquility. I got quotes from 4 drivers including those 'recommended' ones in this thread.

My itinerary was as such:
Day 1: Pick up at Taoyuan Airport and drop off at a hotel at Sun Moon Lake. There are 2 additional stops in between that's conveniently on the way

Day 3: Pick up at a hotel in TaiChung for a one day tour around TaiChung area. (6 locations)

So I sent the same itinerary (In Chinese) to 4 drivers. Here's what they quoted.
Driver 1 (阿辉, +886 988 090 976)
Day 1: 6500TWD for 10 hours
Day 3: 4500TWD for 8 hours, 500/additional hour
9 Seater

Driver 2 (Mr Liu, +886 927 888 032)
Day 1: 7000TWD
Day 3: 5500TWD
Didn't state the number of hours

Driver 3 (邱先生, +886 986 586 977)
Day 1: 5000TWD
Day 3: 4000TWD, 8 hours + 2 hours FOC
7 Seater

Driver 4 (可乐, +886 989 835 979)
Day 1: 7000TWD for 10 hours, 500/additional hour
Day 3: 7000TWD for 10 hours, 500/additional hour
9 Seater
When i sent him the itinerary, he commented that the itinerary is messy. Like wtf? I sent the same itinerary to the other 3 drivers and they gave me the quote immediately.

So we went with the 3rd contact and arranged everything with him. No deposit was required. So we were expecting to see him at the airport but it was another driver who picked us up. We weren't informed that it would be another driver (阿信) and no explanation given beforehand. Nonetheless, we just went ahead with him.
Overall, he is a safe driver, punctual and he doesn't charge extra even when the number of hours exceeded. The only downside is that he's quite quiet so most of the time, it's silent in the car unless we ask him questions. He doesn't help you to take photos too so if you are looking for a driver cum photographer, then he wouldn't be the right person lol. He also doesn't explain about the attractions or talk about the history so if you are looking for a driver cum guide, you should find someone else. He WOULD be the driver that you are looking for if you are looking for a driver who brings you from point to point safely and do not charge you extra for additional hours.

I have done quite a few Taiwan trips so far but haven't really found a driver that I would really go back to. Hence it might be better to ask your friends or colleagues for good and trustworthy recommendations. The drivers that I've encountered usually does not ask for a deposit when you confirm via email/whatsapp/LINE unless you went through an agency. So just be careful if a driver does ask for it.

Frankly, as much as I hate to openly condemn any driver, my experience with Driver 4 is terrible too. Luckily it was just getting a quote and itinerary from him. He promised to get back with an itinerary and quotation but failed to do so. When asked later, he just responded that he has a confirmed guest for the period already.

Driver 4 is an obvious self praise driver who goes round advertising on the internet. If you google for him, you may find out something about his self-advertising backgound, who is doing it for him and how the person had defended the negative reviews for him in the other forum. There are plenty of fake reviews for him here. It is not difficult to detect why (I shall not share here for them to improve their lying skills). Do consider twice before trying to engage him.

Actually, I felt that he was sharing an honest opinion on the not so nice side of the drivers he checked or tried. Maybe a silent reader who preferred to share when he/she feels like it.

I have contacted a few drivers mentioned here and have specifically tried two drivers mentioned in this thread in the early days before. Some honestly did not impress me with their replies, some answered professionally even when they are not available.

Of the two drivers I tried, one was customer orientated while another indeed felt like just trying to push the itinerary through. When I checked with them on a subsequent trip where their cars' capacity cannot fit the number of pax I had, it was obvious who continued to give advice on my itinerary and who just said that his car cannot accommodate the required services.

It is really a hit or miss in this thread. What is a good driver to one may not be so ideal to another pax. However, the thread had became a nuisance when some drivers decided to self-advertise with fake "good" reviews for themselves.

This would be my 3rd stay. Pricey yes, but I don't feel it's unreasonably so. Unbeatable location, decent breakfast, clean and well equipped room.

Somehow I got a much better pricing through direct booking vs Agoda. Almost 30% cheaper if I remember correctly.

I'm lazy and don't have time to go through internet reviews for each driver. Booking directly through hotel also gives me an extra avenue for help if I need it. Traveling with 2 old folks and a little toddler, I'll need as much as help as possible..
