It's like this bro...this is what leather sole is meant to be. After a while, all the smooth surface will be "rough". By then, the shoe is no longer slippery during wet weather. Your 1880 is GY welt, so it is designed to resole when completly worn off. The only challenge is to find a good clobber in SG to do that.

I'm also wearing 2 pairs of 1880. No way I'm going back to normal rubber soles.

i dun think sg has any cobbler that can do this? unless u send back to england to resole?

might as well get a new pair of 1880 haha

I never topy my leather soled shoes.

Many shoemakers(not cobblers) advice their customers not to topy their shoes as they say it prevents moisture from escaping the soles. Whether it is true, I do not know but I still rather wear down my soles and send them back to the factory for re-crafting.

Would the leather soles have a firm grip on wet grounds?

No. Grips require undulating surface. Leather soles can get worned and scratched and rough, but at no point would it become undulating. Ok for dry ground, not good for wet.

After all thats been said, would it advisable to pay more for a shoe with leather sole or less for a rubber soled shoe?

What you should pay for is quality manufacturing in a shoe. Those brands do make rubber sole also and they don't come cheap. The cost of the shoe does not come from whether it's leather soled or rubber soled.

I think there's different camps to topy or not to topy. Topy-ing shoes is a very polarizing topic for shoe aficionados.

Manufacturers can topy for you if you specifically request for it

Personally, Singapore is a wet country, and wet leather is very prone to gouges, scratches and wears prematurely.

You can always send back to Loake for resoling and it costs about $110 excludin shipment.

I topy all my leather soled shoes.

What is the recommended way of taking care of leather shoes? What I do is juz to use a cloth to wipe it to remove any dirt, then use this black shoe cream that I bought from Mister Minit to polish all the leather. Then I leave it to dry for about 3 minutes before putting some newspaper inside to absorb the moisture. Anything else that I should be doing?

I would like to get some cedar shoe trees but I'm afraid the sizing will be a problem if I get from online. Where can I go to get cedar shoe trees in Singapore?

You need to use a conditioner, and not just shoe cream on the shoe.

The conditioner provides more nourishment for the shoe via a variety of waxes and oils, that can penetrate deep into the leather. This will prevent the leather from cracking pre-maturely.

Products like Saphir Reno, Zymol, Lexol, etc are all leather conditioners and/or cleaners.

I used to get my shoe trees from the cobbler at Suntec b1, near the Pet Lovers' Centre. However, now I just buy online. It is unlikely there is an issue, as the shoe trees you are buying are spring-loaded and will adjust to the shoe, as long as you purchase approximately the correct size.

So I should be using a conditioner, then shoe cream? Is it possible to get conditioner locally?

Yes, conditioner is always the minimal starting point. I personally use 3 step process of conditioner, cream then wax.

You can buy conditioner from Taka, etc. I also have some spare Saphir Reno for sale at $33 a bottle, can read the reviews from Styleforum's Shoe Care thread.

I find that my new leather shoes feel very tight and slightly uncomfortable when I wear them. Is this normal, and will it get better after it is worn for a while?

I remember during army, wearing the boots for the first time was also quite uncomfortable, until it got seasoned. Should be similar for leather shoes too right? My shoes are the correct size as they fit me well, the next size would be slightly loose.
