Hi guys, I snagged a pair of red wings from a dude who hasn't worn them or polished them in a really long time.

I'm up keeping them and just wanted to ask, should I be applying the mink oil in coats, over and over, until the pair of boots becomes shiny? I know the leather is absorbing the oil when it goes from glossy to matte surface.

Should I keep applying like everyday, to get them back to normal conditon, to return the boots to regular condition?

Also, when should I apply the leather protector? After the mink oil?

Quite good condition, soles grinded down a bit. Seems he hasn't used them for about a year or two.

This is after a layer of mink oil.

Not sure if should apply more. (more matte-looking/drier than it looks in the pic)

Will probably head to a red wings shop to pick up a bottle of LP to apply soon, too.

Not sure what others here think, but I think the conditions pretty ok leh. Btw curious, why LP on top of mink oil??? Not sure how they work, but it seems contrasting each other.

Anyway, just curious. The way you tie the laces not too loose? Its quite interesting first time i see someone tie like this. :)

Oh cool. Well they don't feel like they're falling apart, like saf boots in the store room after a year, so I guess I'll put it in my footwear rotation as is, and leave the next oil application for a few months down the road.

Not sure leh. According to

http://www.redwingshoes.sg/careguide/?styleNo=8890

8890 care page (this model), that's what they said to do lol. Mink oil second, then LP on top. But if not, I got a whole bunch of mink oil for various leather products for my whole family so I'll just continue using haha

About the laces, I was just curious and checked around for alternatives on lacing styles, and found this

How-Lace-Boots-Army-Military-Lacing-Pattern-Shoelaces-Men-Fashion-Style.jpg

At https://theidleman.com/manual/advice/lace-boots-properly/ and they're right, it actually *does* feel more flexible. taking foot out of boot is also extremely fast haha. It immediately loosens. Next time I go back reservist I might try lacing my saf boots like this too lol

Oh, if thats the procedures from Red Wing, then its best to follow them. I am quite heck care with my 8165, slapping on whatever "cheapo" mink oil from bata. When i brought the boots to Red Wing for their free cleaning service that time, the staff was saying it looks pretty bad... haha I never washed it at all for the past 6 years, just brush and mink oil like twice a year. I am doing the same for my 875, since i guess there isn't much hope to reverse it... :p But I may take extra care for my 8106 since its pretty new and not yet touch any mink oil or other products... :s13:

Do check out their Facebook page. They have such free services randomly and they will give out a sample size leather cleaner, sponge and a pair of shoelaces. But do expect a loooong queue.

Hey guys anywhere to buy huberd's shoe grease locally?
http://www.hosoonlee.com.sg/products/leather-care/
locally think better go for obenauf, never come across huberd selling locally.

i got both huberd and obenauf lp, got my huberd from amazon, now got amazon seller can ship to spore but add in the shipping fee for the money i rather get obenauf locally.
huberd is greasy more easy to apply but obenauf also good.
both are ok to me and spore weather is very humid and the leather dont really dry and crack easily, just apply a light coat is good enough.

for easy application next time i will get the obenauf leather oil.

i dont feel much different after they dry up, biggest different is when applying huberd is greasy easier to apply on.
leather will resist to water penetration to only certain degree. if the boots get wet during rain for a short time it wont penetrate till inside all wet but if you submerge the boot in water sooner later the boot will get wet.
the one i read that people use to water proofing their boots are Atsko Sno-Seal but i see many feedback it dont really work well.
if you want water proof go for boots with gore tex.
