Thanks tanchoo1.

I managed to update the phone to the following:

MIUI Global 11.0.5 Stable 11.0.5.0(QGGMIXM)
Android Version 10 QP1A.190711.020
Android Security patch level 2020-05-01

and ...

NFC still doesn't work
ie. app/phone cannot detect the EZ link or Credit cards

So do I need to do a hard reset?

No idea. I didn't get the dodgy CN export sets.

If nothing else works, you'll have no choice but to do that, right?

Depending on which app in general gaming G90T wins over 720G but 720G is better optimised for some apps than g90T

Just like tge pc world, AMD always faster then Intel. In mobile world, MTK always faster then SD. But in benchmark world only. Real useage story is quite different.

The phone can now detect ezlink cards but not debit/credit cards. Not sure what I did but I reinstalled the ezlink app and it works now. The Google pay (Spore version) appears to have some installation issues. On first install, the NFC option is missing but reappears after a reboot/power off-on.

This is strange. The ezlink app can detect the ezlink component of a POSB debit card but Gpay app can't detect the debit card itself.

Did you try testing with another credit card that doesn't have ezlink functionality?

Yup Google is moving towards to a localised version of Pay hence you cannot find the non-localised GPay anymore. As suggested , only way to find it is in History when you have previously downloaded it.

I've seen older and newer RMN8 Pro. Older using the non-SG version while the newer uses the SG version of Google Pay. Don't know why.

Both works with NFC for payment.

I read your msg. You mentioned detect ezlink cards but not debit/credit card. The debit/credit cards are not NFC cards. So you don't use google pay to detect them if that's what you are having problem with. I write just in case that's what you are doing.

Google Pay uses the NFC for payment at the merchant. You just add the card to GP.

Thanks.

Finally got the ezlink and cc/db cards to work after following the various advice of kind and helpful members here. I tested both the ezlink and credit payments via NFC this morning. Both services worked satisfactorily.

Also found an alternative way to test the NFC. Using settings>About phone>All specs
Then rapidly tap "Kernel version" 7 or more times, you enter CIT where you can test various hardware components of the phone including NFC.

You were spot on. I thought the NFC symbol was to read a new card. In fact, as you said, you have to add the card manually via camera/keyboard.

Thanks for your assistance.

Your welcome. People here also helped me a lot.

BTW, fyi... to make better use if it's relevant to you:

1. can add the NTUC Link Plus card to the phone to tap for points. Procedure is totally different.

2. If you have DASH, can add also but need to be careful of the steps needed to tap. If not, you use Google Pay.

3. Can get NFC tag and program for fun or do some automation. Need apps.

4. When you update your OS software, make sure you test your card by tapping the NFC tag or EZLink card. There is a possibility that there is problem with the update procedure cause problems with your NFC. You may be caught in a situation you needed the NFC but cannot tap.

I'm interested in collecting the passion card rebates. When they ask you to tap to collect the passion card rebates, can I just tap using Google Pay?

I think Passion cannot. The points/rebates are not credit card related (in the "Passes" tab, not the "Payment" tab where the credit cards are). It's not like when you add the credit card, the points/pass points will go with it.

Last I know, Passion Card points not supported.
