I know what you mean.

A bit of a psychological game.

Keeping money or investments that are pure growth that don't pay any distributions regularly makes one feel that way.

But if you have investment portfolio incoem engine that pays monthly then just think of it as being paid every month spend the money however you like.

Feels liberating. Can finally enjoy life!
Ppl will still worry about medical bill.

If you let work defines who you are means something already wrong in the first place, unless the work is something you enjoy doing which is not exactly the norm. 🤔

When you are at your last moment of breath , you would find your question today meaningless.

Nobody on their death bed will say I managed to achieve CEO of Nvidia or DBS de lar. They will remember fondly the relationships that they built or the places they went on holiday with their loved ones.

I could retire.

But I notice tech might exponentially increase life expectancy. Immortal also possible.

Today someone at 60 plus, feels like 50 plus 2 decades ago.
In the near future, at 80 plus, may still feel like 50 plus too.

Tech is not going to just extend the life, it should keep you enabled for longer.

Humans are rapidly being augmented by AI, efficiency is getting boosted, capabilities extended. But important end decisions are still in the hands of humans.

A 20 yo vs a 40 yo, difference is the depth of analysis is different. The young has the vitality but the old has the experience. You can't improve AI or make better calculated risk assessments with your vitality.

Meaning, in the new age, the old could be valued again. I have a strong feeling that education will be changed alot and re-education may one day be a norm.

So at 40s, instead of wind down.
I went to get a new diploma from Singapore poly, and now doing a degree in data which I think will be important. :o

Personally, if my wife is not working, I'd retired too even if not enough money
Worst just get a resale flat, rent out a bedroom to tank for more inflation

Spend the rest of our time together before one of us leave the world first
I would have tried to get back to the workforce if not for my wife's cancer.

Along with a few relatives passing away during COVID.

It really changed my outlook on life.

For those thinking about retirement — have you ever wondered what life will feel like when work is no longer part of your everyday routine?

We came across this interesting CNA commentary on one retiree’s first month after leaving a four-decade career:

“Who am I when the phone stops ringing? Lessons from my first month of retirement”
https://www.channelnewsasia.com/com...-identity-meaning-phone-stops-ringing-6298296

One part stood out:

We often prepare financially for retirement, but what about the sense of purpose and routine that work gives us?

For some, retirement means slowing down. For others, it could mean staying active through mentoring, volunteering, part-time or fractional work.

💬 If you’re approaching retirement, what would you want this next stage to look like?

And if you’re already retired — was the transition what you expected?
Retire got money and forced to retire is so different

Good you didn't go back to workforce.
No point.
