Your luck held out. The freezing cold weather kept the sakuras up for longer. It has been so cold it even snowed this morning in Kyoto.
The sakura at Kawazu was supposed to last from early feb to early march usually. The trees nearer to Mine onsen were starting to wilt, whereas the trees nearer to Kawazu station were either in full bloom or just about full bloom.
The weather was really weird this time round.
My trip was supposed to be a winter trip, but I didn't see snow anywhere during the trip, not even at Takayama.
Instead, we encountered:
- Heavy rain on our Miyajima day (where my husband subsequently fell sick for the following few days after that)
- Hail on our Yunokuni no mori visit at Ishikawa (yes, sudden downpour of solid ice particles on us out of nowhere. It was painful)
- Really gloomy and cloudy day on our ferry ride between Shimizu to Toi (and therefore, didn't managed to see Mt Fuji)
- Sakura blooms at the trees just outside Shimizu station in Shizuoka
- Still gloomy and cloudy when we took Shinkansen from Shizuoka to Atami, and even with Mt Fuji so near us, we still couldn't see Mt Fuji.
- Full bloom Sakura at Kawazu
Somehow, this trip feels more like a mix of spring + autumn...rather than winter. I didn't even needed to use my gloves, except for Miyajima day (which was so rainy, windy and cold), and Takayama day.
On some days, I also didn't need to zip up my winter jacket either.
