Be like China tourists who were seen climbing onto the cherry trees to have photo taken.

Read from another forum someone saw an early cherry blossom bloom at the Nitenmon Gate and plum blossoms at Ueno. Hopefully there will be like 80% by mid march

Just returned from my Japan trip.

On 25 Feb, we visited Kawazu in Izu Peninsula (about 2-3hrs south of Tokyo) and the sakura were mostly in full bloom (some nearly full bloom, some already wilting).

I returned last week. Weather real eratic. Anyway it rained whole day on Saturday and since then it turned cloudy, cold and windy.

I went soga bairin in odawara. Great timing as all the plum blossoms were blooming! Unfortunately didn't see mount Fuji there cos cloudy day. I did manage to see a little of each side while at Hakone.

Your luck held out. The freezing cold weather kept the sakuras up for longer. It has been so cold it even snowed this morning in Kyoto.

The sakura at Kawazu was supposed to last from early feb to early march usually. The trees nearer to Mine onsen were starting to wilt, whereas the trees nearer to Kawazu station were either in full bloom or just about full bloom.

The weather was really weird this time round.
My trip was supposed to be a winter trip, but I didn't see snow anywhere during the trip, not even at Takayama.

Instead, we encountered:
- Heavy rain on our Miyajima day (where my husband subsequently fell sick for the following few days after that)
- Hail on our Yunokuni no mori visit at Ishikawa (yes, sudden downpour of solid ice particles on us out of nowhere. It was painful)
- Really gloomy and cloudy day on our ferry ride between Shimizu to Toi (and therefore, didn't managed to see Mt Fuji)
- Sakura blooms at the trees just outside Shimizu station in Shizuoka
- Still gloomy and cloudy when we took Shinkansen from Shizuoka to Atami, and even with Mt Fuji so near us, we still couldn't see Mt Fuji.
- Full bloom Sakura at Kawazu

Somehow, this trip feels more like a mix of spring + autumn...rather than winter. I didn't even needed to use my gloves, except for Miyajima day (which was so rainy, windy and cold), and Takayama day.
On some days, I also didn't need to zip up my winter jacket either.

Guess the timing I'm going should be just nice. Hope I would be in time to see the Cherry Blossoms in Full Bloom.

Do you guys think it is still possible for me to catch a glimpse of sakura flowers if my travel dates are at end april to early may? targeted to start from Tokyo & ends at Osaka. For 8 days trips (currently thinking to do Tokyo>Kyoto>Osaka, do i need JR Pass? If there are high chances for us to see sakura at haikaido, was thinking if it is wise to skip 2 night stay (travel at night time from tokyo to saporo for a day tour)

Please correct me if i was wrong, i know nothing abt Japan

You can try going up to Hirosaki Castle in Aomori instead of going all the way up to Hokkaido. It might be rush to do it as a day trip but definitely do-able if you set off early.

The last time I saw Cherry Blossoms was in Washington DC back in 1991 or 1992.

I hope I'll be able to catch them for my upcoming trip March 24-30. Maybe not full bloom but at least see something hehe... I forgot about the Cherry Blossoms when I booked the flight/hotel, was thinking of the Good Friday long weekend hehe...

so u think i should still go aomori or further down? If yes, any suggestion?

What are your exact travel dates?

Follow the cherry blossom front when you are there.
News channels/websites will be reporting the cherry blossom come late March/early April.

Best advise is to keep your travel plans flexible.
