Hi all! Recently tried the HD600 in store (Marina Square Sennheiser store), and I fell in love with it! It's a lot better than my Audio Technica WS1100iS! I got it connected to my friend's Samsung phone since I don't have a headphone jack on my mobile. I was listening to some of Queen's Greatest Hits at around 90% volume. I'm going to be using the HD600 at home on my desktop. There's a lot of debate about whether you need amp for the HD600 and I'm unsure of the benefits of having an amp or will the benefits justify the cost. Thus, I would like to seek some advice from this community!! Thanks in advance!

having an dac/amp to me is better as you can only only avoid hissing electrical noise, you can even use it as a speaker if you just dont want to put on your headphone.

Sadly, doesn't ship to Singapore tho. But I heard many people prefer the sound of the HD600 over the HD650 (sound a little bit better and emphasize on the vocals better, less bright on the top-end). The salesperson at the Sennheiser store did say that the HD650 is harder to drive and will be impossible to play on the phone without an amp.

Audiophile set-up spotted! Thanks for the recommendation, the Sound Blasterx AE-5 looks stunning, but it's a soundcard right?

No, Amp is to boost the power E.G u need 90% volume to drive the headphone but with an amp u might need about 50% or less? But of cos you can get an amp for passive speakers too

There're people in the audio community arguing that an amplifier could increase the quality of sound. True or myth?

Anyway there is a lot of "Truth or Myth" in the audio world. E.G better quality cable better sound Quality? Burning-in headphone will enhance the SQ? Better SD card will enhance SQ? never ending la lol

Hmm in a way i guess? That should be the job of a DAC imo
So many things HAHAHA, I'm confused. Perhaps I could get the HD600, plug into my pc, listen to it. If it's too soft then I get the amplifier? I already amazed by the HD600 from a Samsung JX.

The truth is always somewhere in the middle, but most people are not interested in trying to learn compared to wanting to talk.

I have been using the HD6XX with my Soundblaster ZX, Focusrite Scarlet and S8 plus. Maybe I dont have golden ears but it sounds the same to me on all 3 devices. Ok maybe minor differences but not enough for me to avoid either.

Sent from Samsung SM-G955F using GAGT

Wondering if the audio is too soft... I use my HyperX Cloud II and ATH-WS1100iS at around 45% volume (PC)

I started off with a Woo Audi WA7 DAC and later got a Sony TA-ZH1ES between the two I can definitely say the music from the WA7 is much better and warmer especially with vocals (not surprising given its a tube amp).

Worth it or not really up to you, imo unless its a really high grade solid state amp I'm not sure how much difference will you get out of it compared to a soundcard. You can always bring your headphone to an audio shop and try their amps and see if its worth upgrading. For audio very subjective best you try and decide for yourself.
