Hi,

I have a problem here. I am using the ST536V6 and Dlink DIR-300 wireless router

After I configure the modem to bridge mode and connect to my wireless router, everything seems to be fine. In general, surfing net and BT-ing. So I guess my setup worked.

But when I want to use the DDNS service provided in router services, it did not work - it did not get any respond. Similarly when I go through the router setup to check for router firmware updates, it also cannot go through. Seems to have problem with the communication from directly the router to the modem/internet.

Previously when I use cable modem, it is ok. But now, with ST536V6, I can only use dyndns updater which resides on a PC to update my IP address. I am still hoping to use the router to do it though...

Any idea why?

Hmm.... it seemed a lot of people is not aware that, most routers come with the dynamic dns updater software built int. So, you don't need to run the dyndns client software on your pc actually. Just go to your router, enter your user id, password & dyndns server at the dyndns configuration page of your router. It will take care of the rest. So, you don't even need to on your pc to update your ip. You router will do it for you. Try that.

Update: Sep 12, 2008

Finally got back to Ipoh & swapped in the Thomson ADSL modem. Just need to reboot the router to let it detect the new modem. Viola, everything just work as expected!!!

The fact that I managed to get it working. I think I'll summarize it as such:

The "residential cd" is a work-around solution for modem with ISP-specific firmware like the one from Singnet. While the "residential cd" can do the job, the best is still to

1. Flash it with the International generic 7.4.3.2 firmware then
2. You will have free hand to change the settings of the modem like any off-the-shelf modem.
3. Then you won't need the "residential cd" ever.

With the Singnet firmware, the modem's ip address is at 192.168.1.254. After flashing to the international generic 7.4.3.2 firmware. The modem's ip address is 10.0.0.138.

So, to be able to access to the modem again, you can change your computer's ip address to something like 10.0.0.1. Subnet = 255.0.0.0 & gateway = 10.0.0.138. Then you can access the modem's page by typing 10.0.0.138 again.

I am acutally doing that... using router to update the ip... the problem is previously it was working when I was using starhub maxonline. Once I switched to singnet using ST536V6 configured to bridge mode, it's not working any more. When I click on manual update in the router admin page, it's not responding... So not even to mention auto update...

Where did u put the config in?

If you put it into the ST536, you should do so in the router, a bridge modem does not handle connection
If you put it into the DIR300, then its wrong forum already. Anyway, do update if the set has been flashed to 3rd party firmware before.

coyote, maybe you would like to update your blog about the alternatives of bridging, since it is unfair to claim so when a residential disc is not required in the first place.

I am using the st536v6 modem with DLink DI624 Wireless Router & I had my dyndns info setup in the dlink router. I just tried connect to my PC via the VNC using dyndns address & it works.

So, I think the problem may lies with your setup in the router instead.

Try method 2

1. Connect ST536v6 to router's WAN port

2. Connect computer to router's LAN port

3. Set PPPoE (username and password) on router

4. Hard reset the ST536v6 for 10 to 12 seconds (use paper clip to poke hole behind ST536v6)

5. Surf the internet

Note: I you still can't connect, hard reset the ST536v6 a few more times.

An update for everyone.

I tried this method. It works with a Dlink 624UP.

Point 4. Hard reset the ST536v6. Push the button for 12s or until you see the red light on the modem comes on. Once on, wait for the rest of the yellow light to disappear before releasing the button. Once this is done, access the router status page to check on whether the ST536 manage to establish a connection with your internet provider. Once established, voila!

Sorry... it's ST536. Typo error.

Anyway, I got the modem resetted in the morning before I went out and to my horror, the bridging part is gone ! I didn't know that it will also reset it back to factory settings... gotta do the whole setup again.

But once the modem got reseted, everything goes back to normal. Surf net is back to the normal state and BT is also back to normal state...

Hi everyone, i hope i am not hijacking this thread. I have a problem here which could be along the line of discussion in this thread.

I am using Thomson ST536 modem (from Singtel) and a Dlink DIR-300 wireless router. My internet connection will hanged after my FIRST boot-up of the modem and router.

I have to power on and off my modem to reset it (router left untouched), sometimes a few times, in order to get back the internet connection. After that the connection will be quite stable.

Is there any way to solve this? Does 'bridging' the modem helps?

Thanks :)

Nope. Your problem has nothing to do with the topic in this thread.

You are probably having a lousy phone line or your modem has a problem. If you can connect once in a blue moon. Your modem is already in 'bridge' mode.
