when you shoot in jpg, the camera will discard the information which it thinks is not needed and compress the file before writing the photo onto the memory card.

information discarded = details lost

1) dynamic range

look at the overexposed sky in the raw file(left side). had i shot it in jpg, the sky would have been blown into oblivion and cannot be recovered anymore.

2) micro details

first photo is the processed version which i had done, the second photo is the 100% crop of the right eye from the unprocessed raw file. if i had done this in jpg, all the micro details would have been smoothed out and lost.

these are the fundamental reasons why some people may encounter less-than-sharp photos. of course there are a myriad of other reasons as well such as shaky hands, mediocre lens performance, user error etc.

i always shoot in raw format, so that i can have control over the outcome of the photo. and yes, it takes two hands to clap. if you shoot raw and do not know how to process the file, it is as good as giving top-grade ingredients to a person who know nuts about cooking and expecting him/her to come up with a decent meal.

so yeah, every little thing counts if you want absolute quality out of your photos. :)

Anyone who wants to fiddle with raw file processing but don't want spend on products from Adobe or otherwise can get RawTherapee. Also helps you to stay away from warez. I've tried it and it is very good. Current version is 4.0.11.0 and it is available for Mac, Windows and Linux (Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and derivatives).

Yes, it is freeware.

Sometimes is share, but sometimes within that sharing got 1% we often don't know or overlook :)

1% add add... can go a long way.

Nikon CaptureNX isn't that expensive to manipulate RAW. :)
