Temp update

I got the 4650G unit with 16G ram.

Just to report temps.

my room without aircon during the day.

At 100% cpu.. it registers at around 74 degrees.
All cores running at about 4.0-4.1Ghz

If you wanna stretch your budget, can go for option 1 + upgrade to 4650G @ S$840 (cash), at this price point its the better bang for buck compared to option 2. Ryzen 4650G is more superior than i5 10400, although based on your workload you can probably get by with even the 4350g. Option 3 out of the contest because its based off mobile cpu architecture.

1) I was considering Asus NUC previously but I saw my cousin 2x Intel NUC died just past their 3 yrs warranty which made me glad I never bought it
But to be fair, he was running VMs on them 24x7 and never shut them down so maybe u will not see the same issues

2) No brainer to get the 16gb because Aftershock RTS models are quite worth it
U probably don't need 8gb and even 4gb is sufficient, but who knows in the future?

3) Your usage is similar to mine and 4350g is definitely more than sufficient, maybe you can use the spare cash to buy other hardware like mouse or keyboard
No reason for u to get the Intel model unless u need the additional usb ports or u are a Intel fanboy

I certainly will not recommend Intel NUC due to my personal bad experiences with it. But there are people that are not as unfortunate as me. The thing about Intel NUC is that in the past, it was a really nice form factor that's limited to Intel. Fast forward to 2019 and 2020, I feel AMD have caught up if not overtaken them in this aspect.

As to NUC or Deskmini, I would recommend the latter, though it depends on you. If the CPU or motherboard fails, you are unlikely to be able to salvage any parts pm the NUC other than RAM and hard drives. I believe even the wifi card is soldered on nowadays. As for Deskmini, because it uses desktop processors, it is possible that you can replace with the Deskmini barebone or processor (of if you want to upgrade down the road).

In addtion, the NUC don't come cheap, and you need to factor in the cost of RAM, SSD and OS.

New mac mini seem like good option at $900+ with high performance, low power consumption and low fan noise when loaded. However 16 Gb ram model cost additional $300 more, 512 GB storage model cost additional $300. The ram and storage is soldered on motherboard with no expansion slot.

you can diy using deskmini and buying your own parts. but if motherboard or psu spoil need to go distributor

deskmini supports adding rgb strips, 2 sata ports,

2 nvme x4 ports,

running external gpu via pcie x4

DIY a PC is not considered tech savvy. It is just assembling parts like an Ikea furniture. DIY a mobile phone then I said the person is truly tech savvy. These days it is much easier to put together a basic PC. Since you are in this mini PC thread I like to highlight to you that even mini pc we have to put the Storage and the Memory Stick into the machine. Buying a mini pc with everything installed will cost quite a premium. If it is cheap then it is usually entry level configuration.

Since you know how to find your way into this thread. I believe you can do better. If you really want something with no installation on your part, then a laptop may be more applicable for you.

Need advice.

I tried customizing Lenovo ThinkCenter M75q Gen 2 Tiny using the specs of RTS AS deskmini(https://www.aftershockpc.com/welcome/rts_details/3824) and the price is quite similar after applying discount codes. There are some differences though:

Ryzen 3 Pro 4350G(AS) VS Ryzen 3 Pro 4350GE(Leno)
1TB Lexar SSD(AS) VS 512 SSD(Leno)
3yrs(1 yr onsite & 2 yrs carry in) (AS) VS 3 Yrs Onsite(Leno)
Unactivated Windows (AS) VS Licensed Windows(Leno)

I do not know the brand of RAM and SSD that Lenovo is using but AS is using Klevv ram.

Based on forum, AS aftersales reviews are mixed. I have no idea about Lenovo aftersales service as I have never used their product before.

Which one should I go for?
