Sent a service request via website to Simba checking on the unavailability of 5G coverage in areas which used to be covered (for myself and my friends/family). Just received a template reply by their customer service rep asking me to turn on 5G, check compatibility bla bla and emphasizing my plan comes with 5G lol.

Most likely nothing will change.
Their selling point is to bring in as much users as possible with the current network.
Local connection can't be better .

Anyone tried this before?

I'm going away for about a month to Australia... I'm on SuperRoam 10 with only 3 GB roaming data... I think I'll need a bit more and the SuperRoam 12 looks good with 8 GB roaming... Australia is in Group A... so our 400 GB is useless over there...

I was thinking of upgrading to SuperRoam 12 for the month that I'll be there. SIMBA tells me that I can upgrade instantly within the 1st 25 days of the 30 day billing cycle. So I thought to upgrade on the day I leave...

Then when I return home to downgrade back to SuperRoam 10. I was told by SIMBA I can only do that in my second billing cycle... which means the next month...

The difference in subscription is $2 + $2 = $4 for that extra 5 GB... much cheaper than paying $4 per GB under their pay-per-use option...

Any advice? Thanks!

For me I wouldn't be too calculative as my Math is bad, so I'll just keep to 3GB Roaming & pay for any extra via from my account.

Just take note of the phone brand used over there. Some Chinese brand will not be able le to connect to the network.

I've not done it, but with my SuperRoam 10, I've already decided that I'll switch to SuperRoam 12 when I've a trip to a Group A destination. What's $2 or even $4 more for peace of mind, not having to worry about not enough data nor additional charges.

What's more being away for a month.

Yeah thanks! I'm using Samsung so is ok... I was directed by SIMBA website to a Australian website to check if the phone is compatible with their switching off the 3G signal... so I think most of the new phones won't have issue?

Note that is Nov 1 2024, which means it has started.
Seems like it is based on phone, so which sim you use might not matter (other than it might onto a different telco.)
Yeah it's about whether the phone is compatible with their 4G/5G network cos themselves switching off the 3G network... I think many Australians use very old phones and hence the website to check that the phone can still access the mobile networks... which also means some people have to change phones... for Singapore I think not an issue since we change phones like nobody's business....

The thing is after buying a local sim at the airport, same phone can connect to AU network albeit sim is from different provider. So depends on Operator/Phone.

The scary part is that it is not about whether the phone is compatible.
It is about whether the telcos certifies your phone is compatible or not.
So you can have a compatible phone but they can well don't certify it and you would not be able to use it.

Each provider has its own list, so it could well be the phone is accepted by the local sim provider but not by the roaming partner.

I didn't have a problem in 2019 though... not sure about lately... but I think if you're carrying an international edition phone, it shouldn't be a problem lar... usually Samsung phones no issue right? I'm using an A73 5 G now and I think it should be good?

This thing started in end 2024, so experience prior to that will not be relevant.
The scary part about this whole thing is that they can ban phones of their choosing using such lame excuse, and the worrisome part of it is that if they find that they can get away with it, it might expand in scope.

You can say it is a country's policy that does not affect us, but time and again we have seen operators learning from each other, esp for the not so good things.
