It's over for Sony in SG I feel. How often you see ppl using Sony phones? Nearly all are using Apple, Samsung, Huawei and Xiaomi, with the occasional Oppo.

The lack of marketing in SG together with a UI that doesn't look beautiful and gimmicky like the Chinese OS mean that Sony will never have sustainable sales

Even most Japanese don't use Sony but Apple. Sony is a distant 2nd

I do. Maybe I am just bored :s13:

But it is a sad state of affairs. Sony phones are of much better quality but now it has come to the point that the mobile division may pull out of SG completely and we have to get it from Expansys

It is the changing times. Good products do not naturally land onto more consumers' hand, more effort is needed to raise awareness.

It is also not just about marketing anymore.
Makers also need consumers to accept the retail price and value of the product, in order to have consideration for purchases.

People at Sony could be working arses off but from outside, we may think they are just slacking off in promotional methods.

From what I see, they are just half-hearted with their marketing and following yet slow to new trends.

The way I see it

Sony Mobile's prices are actually competitive for the specs and even cheaper than Samsung. But the lazy marketing here pretty much dooms it to be 'unpopular' forever.

They don't even try to buy a page on newspapers to at least let Singaporeans know, 'Hey guys, we actually do great phones at great prices'.

They just content to do on Facebook and IG, which not everybody has

Huawei was very aggressive in marketing for its Mate20 Series, having huge signage around shopping malls in SG and has a mega roadshow at Causeway Point too. It also posted a full page Mate20 Series ad on yesterday's newspapers too.

Maybe that's where Sony Mobile has to learn, if they have the marketing budget to do it. :o

I remember that they advertised on straits times newspaper and on our public buses. Or perhaps cost cutting from japan hq affected us?

I do understand your meaning but the less-informed consumers have little to no idea about the reputation of Sony phones.

The method used by Sony goes as... Our phones have 4K display, S force speakers, motion dual eye camera, etc.

Even throwing such advertising efforts onto newspaper or online, typical consumers do not care to find out what is the mentioned technology unless the makers just simply tell you what it is.

If consumers do not even know Sony, how often would they search the meaning of "Bravia technology" or similar terms.

People are normally more intrigued to know some new things before they find out the technology behind it, rather than being told the new technology and what it does.

This is why I think some of the marketing efforts by Sony are waste of time and lackluster.

Unfortunate but true, average consumers are layman who don't understand or nitpick on the product specs. Its 2018 and there are still people who queue up days before the launch of an iPhone lol. Unless Sony's marketing rival that of Apple or Samsung, its very hard to gain traction in a brand orientated market.

In the past some say they don't like the squarish form factor of Sony phones and they prefer the rounder form factor of the likes of iPhone and Samsung. :o

Granted, Huawei is 'backed' by CCP so their budget will be imba. Don't think Sony can fight with that level.

But at least advertise in the newspapers and put ads in social media more aggressively. Most laypeople are not even aware that Sony launches phones ever since the 'death' of Sony Ericsson

They don't know how to advertise. Consumers only interested in aesthetics and superficial features.

One of the good marketing skills of fruity brand is making big claims out of trivia and/or sometimes dated technology, but some consumers are fascinated by it.

Sony cannot emulate that, Japanese are too humble for own good. :D

Not all consumers like that but somehow aesthetics and superficial features are very effective to attract attention, which sometimes transform into sales.

Might be so. Even Japanese are not supporting Sony and rather pump their money into Apple
That's because Japanese telcos subsidised iPhone models more than Android phones, and Japanese telcos market are largely contractual too.

Consumers like beautiful design and features that they pursue, like camera for example.

That's why phone makers are now putting more camera lens and extra features like AI, so that they can market it to ordinary consumers easily.

Most laypeople don't care about specs. Shoving down the fact that it is SD 845 isn't going to impress them unless they are tech geeks themselves.

The Chinese brands are rather successful in marketing because they know how to market aesthetics and camera, which is what most care about, despite their UI being buggy

Oh well, ironic that an American brand receives more support than a Japanese brand.

Which is what Sony advertisement in SG has not been doing. Not expecting them to put AI like Huawei but they can do better
