End of year thoughts ...
This turned out longer that I expected, but given that I rarely post long posts ...
Candito Revew: These are my imputed 1RM for the last two cycles:
Cycle 1: SQ 145 / B 110 / DL 155 = Total 410
Cycle 2: SQ 147.5 / B 117.5 / DL 160 = Total 425
Cycle 3: SQ 152.5 / B 120 / DL 165= Total 437.5
My tested maxes (i.e. heaviest weight I actually lifted) were SQ 140 / B 107.5 / DL 150 = Total 397.5 starting. Over the past three days, its now SQ 145 / B 115 / DL 155 = Total 415. Given that all of these were for reps, I could have probably gone heavier.
Candito has been an overwhelming success for me, I don't think I've ever lifted so much, or improved in such a short time. The plus points are:
- Variation by week, so it does not get boring (unlike 5x5, vanilla 531)
- Lots of volume - especially benching volume with benching accessory movements. This is the main reason for the dramatic increase in bench.
- Even though there is lots of volume, fatique is managed well, by varying between weeks, and also increasing frequency of days in the early weeks.
Minus points
- There seems to be very little DL work. I understand that Candito says that the SQ work will carry over to DL, but still, given that DL is my worst lift, I might add more volume here.
- Volume drops dramatically in week 4-5, so there were times I could combine workouts or do back-to-back days even though this was not prescribed by the program.
2015 Look Back
Starting the year - I was at SQ 130x2 B 107.5x1 DL 145x2. Total imputed 1RM would be 392.5. Now I'm ending off at imputed 1RM total of 437.5 - gain of 45kg across the 3 lifts. Half of these gains are from the past two months on Candito.
It's been a good year. I leaned down early in the year under RPT, and then started Beyond 531, which was a great learning experience. DL had a couple of set backs with strained lower back, but managed to bounce back to marginal gains by the year end.
My goal at the beginning of the year was to do the 1/2/3/4 pps for the 4 major lifts, for 5xReps. So the tally is:
OHP – 1ppsx5: achieved!
B – 2ppsx5: exceeded! Managed x6
SQ – 3ppsx5 – failed! Only managed 3 reps
DL – 4ppsx5 – massive fail! Never even smell 1 rep!
2016 Goals
Looking ahead, I want to try for the 1000 this year, so looking at hitting 460 total 1RM. I will continue with Candito for a few cycles – even if I make minimal progress, I might hit this by mid year! A stretch target will be to hit 500kg for the 3 lifts, although I think this would take at least 2 years to do.
I also need to get a belt and some proper shoes, so those are easy goals to fulfil by throwing away some money.
Finally, am toying with the idea of entering a meet, or at least going down to watch one. Just to give some goal for all the workouts
