Squat 130 4x6
Bench 92.5 5x6 , 3
Deadlift 125 3x5

Going on a bit of ramble below, but that was a really good session.

I was quite worried going into this workout, since it would be doing three big lifts. Yesterday, while doing my regular back massage, I also felt a sharp pain in the back, first time in the past three weeks. I was worried that today I would trigger something off again and have to start from scratch again.

I was feeling a bit tired after doing the squats and bench, but decided to press on with the deadlifts. Just some lighter weights focussing on form and making sure everything in the set up is done well, and controlled lifting.

Somehow, the sumo deadlift's just seem to "click". It's almost like a I felt a direct connection between the mind and the ham/glute muscle, and I could really focus on the glutes lifting the weight.

Sumo is quite different from conventional DL or squats, where you can visualise the movement (in my mind). Sumo works in a 3D plane, so it's not just a straight forward perpendicular leverage to the bar, but an angular leverage. It was lilke my muscles finally "learned" how to load and then execute the lift ...

A bit of ramble, but it's workouts like this that make me feel quite satisfied. Now I hope I can replicate this the next time I go to the gym

So I went for my first powerlifting meet today, and it was a mixed, but mostly good experience.

Tldr- I got my a$$ wooped in my category, and if you suck at deadlifts (like me) then you suck at powerlifting

I got 7/9. S 175 B 117.5 D 172.5 for a 465 total. No prs but still a decent total given my recent back problems

Squats were good. I got one red light for my last attempt for depth, and I probably could have gotten 2.5 more.

Bench failed at 125 for my last attempt. I was really disappointed as I had this in the gym before and really thought I had it in the bag as my strongest lift. I was complacent though and didn't engage my late enough, thinking I could muscle my way up as I usually do. But it wasn't to be.

Deadlifts were crazy. I failed my last attempt at 177.5 (which was still below my max 180) I was very slow off the ground, but somehow managed to grind it up and even lock out! But suddenly the whole bar felt unstable and I tumbled to the ground. Very weird because that has never happened to me. Someone thought I had blackedout but I was conscious all the way. No lift.

Anyway I guess this total was within range of what to expect, especially given the two back strains I had. Even though I had a 20kg lead after my bench, my only other competitor creamed me on the deadlifts as he pulled more than 200, eventually breaking the national record for my age cat and weight! Hats off to him!

This meet was very long though, I was there from 8am and the flight was only over at 4pm! The pm flight is deadliftting now at 10pm as I type!!! It is like a marathon.

So I am going to take a 2 week break now, also due to work travel. Then it's back to the grind! I kind of want to put in more work on the squats and the bench because They are my strengths and hopefully squatting will pull up my deadlifts.

Ok bye!
