SQ Redemption Devaluation

This is like the clearest explanation I've seen.

I was actually valuing it in terms of opportunity cost -- like what I would've done with the points if I weren't redeeming for this. But this is a clearer way of looking at it. Thanks!

Glad I was able to help. I just had enough of other people insisting that a mile is worth at best 2 cents and mostly 1 cent, some even going the extent of linking certain blogs giving ridiculous calculation methods. I've never tried to convince/persuade anyone that they should follow my calculations, because it's their miles/points eventually and it doesn't affect me at all regardless of what they do with it. I have real life friends boasting to me that they 'managed to redeem xxx points for yyy worth of zzz vouchers' and I'm like LOL. Some mindsets just cannot be changed.

For those that pm'ed me criticising my '10cpm value' for the SIN-JFK flight, I fully acknowledge, in fact explicitly stated that it is just the 'paper value'. If you even bothered to read my entire post you might have thought otherwise.

Lastly, some of you have been asking me about certain promo fares that may result in less than 1cpm of calculated value. I'll just briefly touch on some points below.

1. Promo fares don't always happen. They're called promotional fare for a reason.

2. These fares book into Economy Super Saver, which is the most restrictive. There are no changes allowed at all, and cancellations will only get you the airport taxes back. A saver award (regardless of class) will always allow changes. Date changes are free, and other changes are allowed at a nominal fee, which could be waived if you're elite status holder. You could argue that 'I don't need any changes', but not needing it is different from not being able to do it.

3. Flexibility of booking your trip as 2 separate one way. One way cash tickets only applies for Flexi and above, which will not get you the promo fares.

4. Finally, you're comparing a freaking BUSINESS ticket to the cheapest ECONOMY ticket out there. That in itself is a joke to me. If you're looking at these kind of comparison, might I suggest that you fly on LCCs instead.

Can mods mark this as a sticky thread? Good explanation on value of a mile.

Things certain in life:
1) Death
2) taxes
3) people who don't read anything that's already discussed and post here "what to do with miles? Should I use it as rebate?"
4) people who claim redeeming miles is useless
5) people who say they are happy with economy and will never need business class (same rationale as 4)
6) people who ask if woman still gets fever

Point 6 is a valid question. If my wife n mistress don't get fever every month, then I worry.

Thing is, you can only find out in the next month. All DP reported are 1 month late, I don't think it helps people make an informed decision. If I tell you it worked for the month of Feb, it doesn't mean that it will still work for the month of Mar. It also doesn't guarantee your bonus come 16 Apr.

KF's reply as follows :

Question:
Suppose I redeem a ticket today, 17 Mar 2017, to travel to Hong Kong on 1 Mar 2018.
On 1 Jun 2017, can I call KF to change my date of travel to 1 Apr 2018 without incurring fees or topping up of miles ? (note: 1 Apr 2018 is beyond initial ticket validity period).

KF reply:
If you have redeemed the award ticket based on the current scheme and want to change the travel date on or after 23 March 2017, we will be able to assist with revalidation of your new preferred date of travel, subject to availability and ticket validity. Please note that change of travel date can be done offline through KrisFlyer Membership Services.

Revalidations done on Singapore Airlines’ website on or after 23 March 2017 involves re-pricing, thus the new scheme will apply if self-serviced online.

For change of travel date beyond ticket validity, it requires re-issuance of award ticket. As such, the new scheme will be applied. On top of the applicable re-issuance fee of USD20 per passenger, additional miles will be collected and airport taxes will be re-assessed (fuel and insurance surcharges will be removed).

For the given scenario, re-issuance of award ticket will be required as the new preferred date of travel is beyond the ticket validity. The new scheme will be applied with a service fee of USD20, subject to seat availability.

So exactly as what I have provided right after the announcement. Any date change beyond 1 year of ticket issuance date will use the new rates. My position on this still stands, those wanting to know more can refer to post #34 on page 2 as well as #236 on page 16.

yes you are correct.

The 2 KF CSO I spoke to gave me the wrong info.

With this confirmation, I think I will most likely redeem 2 x OW F to Tokyo ... no suites but SO say never mind lah.

u mean now for changing flight times is chargeable? currently is free right

Revalidate vs reissue.

Revalidation, within ticket validity
- date change for flights

Reissue
- route change, ie, SIN-SYD change to SIN-BNE
- change of booking class, economy to business
- extend validity of ticket
- change of carrier (ie, SQ TO BR)

Revalidation is free. There's a fee for reissuance. Revalidation, ticket nbr remains the same. Reissuance, ticket nbr change

it depends on route. Not clear cut is good or bad,
just to share, i was keeping a list of all the biz class ticket redemption availability on excel for the past 1 week.
last sunday, some flights were not applicable, or waiting list, and ytd it was opened.
naturally more open flights became unavailable, but what surprised me was the not applicable becoming open/wait list. some wait list became open as well.

Frankly, why would you do that ?

You might as well wait till after 23rd then redeem for Saver on your preferred dates, without the fuel surcharges.

Waiting till after 23 March won't change saver availability. Perhaps he needs to travel on his desired dates and saver is only available on a waitlist.

It only opens up when others cancel or rebook their ticket. SQ will not release additional saver space, this was confirmed by inventory control years back when I made my first redemption.

Actually, they do. Depending on routes. Some routes default on waitlist and open at a later stage. Some time, where u have already confirm booking on return, they may open up more, especially where thr fiight is empty. Lastly, when u waitlist for those flights departing in 1-2 weeks time.

According to Priority Pass website there is. You can download PP's app onto your phone to search while on the move

https://www.prioritypass.com/en/loungesearch?entity=bea1e6f5-4a7c-4065-9493-62d92172709c

I used it once a number of years ago before I had frequent flyer status, it's pretty basic. Do note it's a landside lounge so it's BEFORE IMMIGRATION. So after collecting boarding pass, follow the instructions on the website to find the lounge.
