I signed up for Giga Promo:
50GB for 3 months
500 SMS
500 mins
$5 gigaBucks (credits) for 3 months

4th month onwards it is $10/mth
Data reverts to 6GB after 3 months.

How do I change plan to the promo one $18 @ 50GB?

The change of plan on app is for $40 @ 20GB.

Don't seem to be able to select the $18 for 50GB promo.

Maybe port out and port back in to giga, if it's possible.

Hi everyone. I just switched to Giga. Straightaway, got this horizontal bar called "VoLTE" appear on the top right hand corner of my phone.

I have tested the speed, and I am amazed. Although Giga only got 4G, the Giga 4G download speed and upload speed is much faster than the TPG 4G+ download speed and upload speed.

I thought TPG 4G+ is already very fast.
Turns out, Giga 4G is faster.

The + in TPG 4G+ is really just a deception.

Anyway, this is the speed test result when I tested TPG 4G+ and Giga 4G. Both at the same location.

TPG 4G+
Download speed: 74.3 Mbps
Upload speed: 2.97 Mbps
e5z9Srv.png

Giga 4G
Download speed: 136 Mbps
Upload speed: 35.1 Mbps
kQFopMq.png

Other than that, whereas TPG only provide 30 SMS allowance, Giga provides 500 SMS allowance.

Although TPG's voice app uses data to make phone call and effectively means unlimited calls, Giga don't need use app and I personally think 500 mins is more than enough. Plus, using VoLTE to make phone call will definitely be much clearer and reliable than use data make phone call. I finally can once again use my handphone to make phone call without using app already. :)

On the billing part, I have never tried TPG billing, cuz I am porting out to Giga at just three weeks into the plan, but the TPG billing seems ambiguous.

Giga, on the other hand, I got try before. I just tag my bank card to the Giga app, and the Giga app will auto deduct every month one.

Yes, I got try Giga before, and that was in 2020. In fact, I tried for about ten months, before I changed phone and changed to M1.

Then, because I had difficulty in even activating my M1 line (the customer service hotline is the only option, and I had to wait very long before they pick up), I switched to Singtel and stayed there for one year (contract).

Then, I switched to Changi Mobile, suffered the very poor data connection which can sometimes even go down to 3G. Ported to TPG, thought TPG was the best, but in the end was disappointed when I found out my SMS limit had reached and they only offered 30 SMS allowance.

And now, I am back with Giga.

Another reason why I returned to Giga is because Giga made the promissory statement that the $18 for 50GB offer is forever.

Towards the end of last year, inflation was already experienced in groceries and food and beverages. This year, the astrologers have said that the inflation will worsen.

To cut long story short, I am concerned that the telcos will increase their prices, and the $18 for 50GB offer may not be offered anymore, especially in the second half of this year when the water flow in opposite direction will affect technology, leading to power shortage.

But above all, my topmost concern is the data connection in Sungei Gedong Camp, which I will be going for ICT. It's a known fact that in Sungei Gedong Camp, the fastest is Starhub, second is Singtel, third is M1. I think no need to say also know, TPG is probably fourth. I really do not want to be the last to receive the WhatsApp messages. Therefore, I feel that I should change to Giga.

Giga, 我回來了!

I will probably not leave Giga again, unless next time when I change phone to 5G phone and I realised Giga is not the most valuable for money (one of the lowest rate per gb, and one of the cheapest). Ultimately, I'm not asking for cheapest. I'm asking for reliability.

I'm probably staying with Giga forever.

Viva la giga. :D

haha quite a Giga fan you are. I am using Giga $18 plan as my main too. TPG is really more for the value for money, so having that as secondary line for work

Hi, just wanted to point out a few flaws in that statement.

Firstly, you cannot compare 4G (LTE) and 4G+ (LTE-A/LTE-A Pro) between telcos. Just because one telco has LTE-A doesn't mean that their LTE-A is faster than another telco's LTE.

LTE-A (4G+) is really only meant to be compared with the same carrier.

Here are my two theories as to why your TPG speedtest came out slower than your StarHub one:

1. TPG has fewer base stations, and thus every user experiences slower speeds. Here's an analogy, LTE-A is like using a bigger water pipe to send water to every house. Company A (TPG) uses 1 big water pipe (4G+) to send water to the entire SG, whereas Company B (StarHub) uses 100 small water pipes (4G) to send water to SG. Each pipe is smaller, but because there are so many, there is more water being sent to SG (data speeds are faster)

2. You were unfair to TPG, and choose a bad spot (accidentally or otherwise) with poor signal. There were no signal strength readings included in your data, and you didn't test multiple times at different locations and average scores. TPG's 4G+ can be fast (I've seen 200Mbps), and while StarHub is generally faster, I honestly think either works fine.

If you want to take away smth from this, just remember that the belief that 5G > 4G+ > 4G is NOT TRUE. Under completely identical conditions it is true, but there are many variables that affect speed, so looking at 4G+ and immdiately thinking that it's faster than 4G is bad.

The location of test, by the way, is at Jurong West Street 81.

Please enlighten the HWZ community on where you managed to get TPG data speed that is more than 100 Mbps.

Anyway, I have also tested my house wifi recently. My house wifi is using the Singtel wifi. The download speed is always more than 100 Mbps, and the upload speed is always more than 140 Mbps (in fact usually around 210 Mbps and above).

TPG, on the other hand, only the download speed can reach around 50-80 Mbps. The upload speed is usually single digit.

I guess you are probably an employee at TPG or a supporter of TPG. Nonetheless, I really hope you can provide evidence that the TPG data can really achieve more than 100 Mbps of download or upload speed. Like, tell us where is the location, then those who have TPG sim card can go there to test it for themselves.

Are we comparing Singtel Wifi with TPG Mobile Data?

But anyway TPG's 50-80Mbps DL speed is actually quite decent, I have done much worse with M1 previously.

Okay. Back to topic. I just tested the Giga data speed again.

Download speed: 144 Mbps
Upload speed: 50.4 Mbps

Name me a faster 4G LTE (data) connection. I will wait.

There isn't one. StarHub has been ranked by OpenSignal and Ookla (the app you're using) to have the fastest 4G (although SingTel is faster for 5G)

My point isn't that TPG is faster than StarHub (because it's not), it's that there are multiple factors that can make speedtests faster or slower, not just whether it's 4G or 4G+, and one test isn't enough to immediately say that one is faster than another. Instead, you can look at the information below, where these companies have compiled thousands of tests to arrive at their conclusions.

https://www.opensignal.com/reports/2021/11/singapore/mobile-network-experiencehttps://www.speedtest.net/global-index/singapore
As for 200Mbps speeds, here's one that I got (it's at my office though, so I can't say location, and no I don't work for TPG and my office isn't near theirs)

One other place where I got 200Mbps was at Woodlands North MRT (in front of the faregate)

None of the LTE networks in Singapore can exceed 100Mbps in uplink for real world outdoors.

The highest uplink is 102.0Mbps, and that's typically for 5GNR NSA devices. Real world 90Mbps or so max.

LTE UEs typically get 51.0Mbps or 75.4Mbps uplink cap, this is typically why you see at most 50-65Mbps for Big Three for most cases.

Also, I have seen TPG Telecom having 100+Mbps downlink too.

https://www.speedtest.net/my-result/i/4333583536
I know the date is in late-2020, but that's because I'm using SingTel/M1 in this phone in most parts of 2021 and now.

I do have TPG Telecom in another phone (Poco X3 Pro).

The reason why you always see <10Mbps uplink is because those high speed downloads is typically done through 2300MHz TDD-LTE Band (Band 40), and that's why you see the 4G+. It's likely to be 80-20 configuration, where 80% of the time it's on downlink, 20% of the time it's on uplink. This is why downlink is prioritized and uplink suffers.

If you were to use LTE Band 8 (FDD-LTE 900MHz) for TPG Telecom, there's chance that your uplink speed isn't single digits.

I've seen Band 8 having 20+Mbps uplink on TPG too. Yes it's not as impressive as the 50-90Mbps the Big Three can give, and that's because they have much more limited spectrum to play with.

Note: I'm not TPG employee, nor TPG supporter. I'm just a customer, trying to give an unbiased view. I'm a customer of all 4 mobile network operators, directly (MNO) or indirectly (MVNO).
If anything, your view made it sounds like an advertisement for StarHub/Giga.

Just signed up for giga, looking to add the 5g pack. Are their 5g speeds noticeably faster than 4g?
