I agree with Gribber on 2. What is a wonderboy anyway? This is the first time I've seen that term.
Sorry my English is likely lacking, the wonderboys are what you might call the new ISPS and not Singtel/M1/or Starhub.

Sorry I am asking a question please and would like a polite answer (Gribber - is that possible as I know you dislike Apple but none of us are perfect?)

i think you can see my post instead of asking .
Gribbler: This is a forum where most of us share our experience. I asked those qns hoping that some user with relevant experiences can voice out. I do not know if you have used MOL Cable. Lastly, you seems very pro-active in this thread, so on this note most ppl will think you are Pro-SH. What i was looking for is an unbiased ans.

Thanks!

better router and claim 3000 pts imo :)

I also like to stick with Starhub, because I am having TV and mobile also from SH. May i know how I can claim the 3000 pts? If we use our own router, will SH still support if there are any connection issues

You can use your own router, but you have to configure certain settings, which, depending on model, can be a hassle.

I'm anti-SH, so naturally I have no praise for it. The international bandwidth is clearly lacking, certain sites will never load, and most importantly, it does not assign static IP to its subscribers. This last point applies to M1, SingTel, SuperInternet* and myRepublic*.

* = unless you apply for a certain plan or value added service

Fibre is definitely faster than Cable. I have been using SH for nearly 9 years.

No idea on how to claim the 3000 points because my brother took the D-Link router back then. Officially, SH won't provide support for 3rd party routers.

sorry, i do not Pro-SH. i do not know how you derived that. I just state what i have experienced. read the thread title again. btw, i was once a StarHub Cable user - if that does answer your qns

Problem of large threads like this is that a lot of useful information has been drowned out by user activity. Given that the threadstarter is banned, the first post can't be updated to refer many current and prospective StarHub subscribers about the service and how to request for direct ONT, recommended routers, steps to take to spoof as and bypass the Residential Gateway, recent SamKnows reports, native IPv6 etc etc.

While his response isn't the best, it's certainly more convenient for everyone if we use the Search this Thread function more often.

:s13: - thanks to stupid mods. i have requested for a transfer but mods refused like a ****

1. To get the 3000 points, tell the CSO who takes your call that:
a) you want to use your own router and
b) that you're supposed to get 3000 points in lieu of the Dlink 5402.

If the CSO says you're wrong, politely insist that s/he check with her/his line manager.

2. Also tell the CSO that you'll be going "direct ONT" - this means you'll be plugging your own router into the ONT instead of connecting through the 5402. (This means digital voice will NOT be an option for you - unless you have a voice capable modem on StarHub cable)

3. That's all there is to it - there are NO settings required on your router. Plug into the ONT and you're ready to go. It's what I've done nd it works well.

Somebody wrote something about international bandwidth being inadequate on StarHub - this is not the case in my experience. Singtel shows better numbers on samknows but StarHub isn't far behind and samknows (per my understanding) represents results to a single server in the US only, which is not a good representation of typical use. Of course, I could be wrong on my understanding on samknows and I'd be happy to be corrected by anyone who KNOWS otherwise for a fact.

I also like to stick with Starhub, because I am having TV and mobile also from SH. May i know how I can claim the 3000 pts? If we use our own router, will SH still support if there are any connection issues

Hi

Please pardon me for what I'm going to ask. I decided to use 3rd party router as I cannot tolerate anymore on the wireless speed of Dlink DVG-N5402SP from Starhub. I'm on VOIP with Maxinfinity, so direct connect is not an option to me. Sigh...

I bought Asus RT-N56U (N66U was out of my budget) yesterday. I upgraded the firmware to 3.0.0.4.360. After that I setup according to this set of steps:

1. Plug the router into port (1-4) of D-Link Home Gateway using a LAN connection.
2. Do a direct connection to D-Link Home Gateway with your PC/Laptop and enter (http://192.168.0.1) in your Internet Explorer.
3. Username : admin, Password : password (default).
4. Please Click on "SETUP" - > "Wireless Setup" - > "Wireless Basic" -> Uncheck on "Enable Wireless LAN Interface" -> "Apply".
5. Please Click on "ADVANCED" - > "Firewall and DMZ" - > "DMZ" -> Check on "Enable DMZ" to enable DMZ feature - > Select the WAN Port and input the IP Address of your router on "DMZ Host IP Address" -> Click on "Apply".
6. The process for Bridge Connection(DMZ) is completed.

I could not access internet and unable to go into WEB GUI via 192.168.1.1. Firstly I did not know to plug in WAN or LAN port in Asus router, secondly I used default IP address of Asus RT-N56U's (192.168.1.1) for DMZ and thirdly I had no idea whether require to change settings for Asus router.

I reset all router and try the steps in this link
Music.Photo.Life.: A StarHub MaxInfinity Situation: Use Your Own Router

I could connect to internet and done speed test but I could not entered WEB GUI via 192.168.1.1 to set security for Asus router after that.

How do you setup Dlink with Asus Rt N56U?

Somebody else can respond to you with specific settings on the 56U but here's what I did in the initial stages when I was using the Apple Exteme Gen6 alongside the D-Link 5402:

1. Logged into 5402 and disabled wifi
2. Connected the Apple Extreme into a LAN port on the 5402 - this connects to a "network" port on the Extreme and NOT the WAN port on the Extreme
3. Switch on the Extreme, use Airport Utility to tell it to not offer DHCP services

That's it.

I didn't do any DMZ settings - I didn't (and don't) see the point. The D-Link issued the DHCP address, the Extreme ran the wifi. (I've since removed the 5402 completely and gone "Direct ONT").

As an aside, if someone can educate us on the utility of the DMZ settings on the 5402, that'd be most appreciated.

So in that case, if i need to have the phone connection, then do I need to subscribe separately?

Ok my direct ONT is working.

Actually I posted on 17th july 2013 to do switch over but the only the digital voice got switched to the motorola SB5121V cable voice modem and I had to call again on Mon 29th July 2013

Was informed yesterday the switch over would happen today and take the entire day today.

Woke up around 8 something this morning and discovered the internet on the dlink dvg-n5402sp was disconnected

Had to reset my asus rt-n66u to factory default as in on and off the asus and hold the reset switch behind the asus rt-n66u before the internet could be detected. Whatever manual vlan settings i put in earlier wouldn't connect.

Starhub still hasn't called me back yet as of now to tell me to switch over.

Learnt that I could do the switch over from my friend once the internet on the dlink doesn't connect.

Wan port of asus rt-n66u goes into port 1 of ont.

on and off both and reset the asus. Working Internet on direct ont.

If you need voice, the PRACTICAL thing to do is IGNORE everything I've written so far. Take the D-Link 5402 - it comes with a voice port. Plug in your own router into one of its LAN ports (the other end goes to one of the LAN ports in your new router, NOT to its WAN port), login to the admin page of the D-Link router and disable wifi (so you don't needlessly create wifi interference for yourself), and skip the 3,000 rewards points (which are given in lieu of the D-Link router).

The IMPRACTICAL thing to do is to still go Direct ONT, buy a voice-enabled cable modem from someone on ebay.com.sg (must be SG - this needs to be a StarHub-approved voice-enabled cable modem), call StarHub, tell them you want digital voice, pay the activation fee, give them the MAC address of the voice-enabled cable modem, plug it into your CABLE point (not the fibre point), and hope everyone got everything right so everything works.

Personally, I'd go with the practical option. But that's just me. ;-)

Well I had more problems with the Digital Voice on the DLINK 5402 than on the direct cable modem. Its easier when I am out to on and off the cable modem for my parents and maid to get the telephone line working. There was alot of restarting involved unlike when it was on the Huawei RG 256s

Internet was working on the dlink but the telephone wouldn't work. then rebooting got the telephone up but the internet down that kind of problems.

I had the same experience. Woke up in the morning to find no Internet access on my StarHub link (I also have MyRepublic - long story). Figured it might be related to DirectONT. Plugged in the Extreme directly and restarted, and Bob's your uncle. :) Around 5 pm I received a call saying "your Direct ONT is ready"... I was like "yes, I know..." :s13:

You should take a look at the MyRepublic and ViewQuest threads on this forum. I think the users with the former ISP will be more than happy to help prospective subscribers! They seem quite enthusiastic.

I am sorry I was not clear originally.

I was with Starhub Maxinfinity, but 18months ago I was able to move back to my original MaxOnline which frankly did not suffer the issues that the fibre guys were having, and noticeably the international bandwidth was very poor. MaxOnline continues to be stable and reliable today.

My unclear question was, 18 months ago (wnen I was using Maxininity) the other ISP ( the newer ones) were offering good deals and were supposedly better particularly international bandwidth (CIR). Looking around here and elsewhere these days, I notice that this might not be quite the case now and Starhub is in fact far better. I would want to connect my new shiny Apple Airport Extreme direct to the ONT which I know now can be done. VOIP is not an issue as I already have a cable modem for digital Voice, and 3000 points was news thank you...

I like Starhub and use their other services.
