Just testing my internet speed on Speedtest.net

on 2.4ghz, wireless, mac os x

DL : 18 mbps
UL : 23 mbps

on 5 ghz, wireless, mac os x

DL : 21 mbps
UL : 18 mbps

Hmm, could the slow speeds be attributed to a wall between my router and my laptop? I'm on the 200mbps plan btw.
why dont you try putting yr laptop beside your router and test?

should know whether the wall is affecting it.

SH provided me with the 865L :) Is there any configurations or settings that i should change? I dont think its the router right?

You try to test with wired first, to ensure you can get ard 200 mbps.

Then test with line of sight.

Line of sight tests -

2.4ghz

DL: 84mbps
UL : 105mbps

5ghz

DL: 203mbps
UL: 198mbps

So i guess its really the wall. -_- any recommended solution on how to work around this? :/ So ironic, i'm like less than 5m away from the router! (my room to the living rm)

only 1 wall?

usually 1 wall will not affect 2.4 ghz too much.

have you try scanning the no of people using of 2.4 ghz in your area?

what wireless adapter you are using?

Hi There, thanks for responding.

There are two people using the 5ghz band and two people using the 2.4ghz band (including me)

No wireless adaptor used, just connecting straight from my MacBook Pro.

Any suggested workaround for this problem? Connection seems abit erratic too. :(

Should I consult Starhub or something ? Thanks guys.

Try RT-N66U. The cost of ac routers still can't be justified at this moment.

No single router will give you great coverage. The 865 is actually quite good - I suggest ADDING an access point (rather than REPLACING the router). Use this access point as a wireless extender. Set it up somewhere closer to your bedroom, in a location where the wifi signal from the 865 is still very good.

Also consider raising the height of the 865 to a minimum of 3 feet above the ground (yes, it helps) and make sure the router is not inside a glass cupboard.

The best solution of all would be to run ethernet cabling into the bedroom and set up an access point there - it's what I've done (I've run ethernet into the master bedroom as well as the study with APs in each room) and I get awesome coverage all through my home. It's a one-time investment (200 bucks or less) with long term returns and significant peace of mind. :)

Calling Starhub is unlikely to be effective - your speedtests indicate that the router and connection works well. You may want to consider running ethernet into your room or using a wifi extender (see my previous post).

That's starhub...lol

Don't jump the gun, pal :)

Which server did you use? Perhaps you should select Viewquest's server.

I noticed that my upload speed never go beyond 150Mbps if I'm using SingTel, NewMedia, SGIX or Telin's server.

I'm on StarHub 200 too (wired cat5e) and these are the results I got just now from 2 different servers (Viewquest & StarHub).

Seem like starhub and viewqwest are good friends. Only if starhub can offer viewqwest speed and bandwidth with its current price.. All will be totally steady..

Or perhaps Viewqwest could offer its speed at StarHub's prices, and throw in further discounts for "hubbing", and add mobile and TV services for single-provider convenience, and... ;-)

As the saying goes, if wishes were horses, pigs would fly...

Hmm, for a wireless extender, any particular model? I saw some have the "plug in" style, while some look just like routers. Do i have to use a wired connection for these extenders? Or can they function wirelessly? Planning to put one in my room or the adjacent room so as to boost the signal and eliminate dead spots..

So i can just purchase this and direct connect to the huawei modem starhub provided ?

As i'm living in a executive hdb, the fiber point is at living room, and one of my bedroom signal is damn low and the speed is like only 1mbps (wireless) when i did the speedtest. My current connection setup is Huawei modem > huawei router > dlink DIR615 router. All provided by starhub.

WIll the RT-N66U be able to provide a better coverage and network speed ??

Definitely better coverage and network speed. And yes, the huawei modem can connect to the router as long as there is a lan port.
