Lucky that a steal for the ONT bundled plan.

SH need to wake up their idea and enter the price war for existing customers as well. Still hoping for the day $29.55/mrh for 2 yrs for their 5Gbps no router plan.

That shown SH can actually offer this affordable plan to everyone, just that now is lock to selected people for whatever reason, if they don’t release as $29.55 to existing users, even they priced it at $32/mth no router, I also will happy go and sign up.

Indeed.

VQ effective price for the updated 10Gbps no-frills plan is at S$38.75 now. They offer bridged ONR (effectively the same as ONT) but they allow the user to request to configure in router mode (unbridged ONR mode) as well. One problem is that VQ is using CGNAT so those who needs a public IPv4 address may need to pay for static IPv4 add-on at S$4.03 per month. But the total price is still pretty decent.

Starhub 5Gbps plan at S$29.55 will be a very good option. Hopefully they would open this up to more users (including existing users) and allow the option to go with either ONR or ONT.

I tend to think many users will go with the Nokia ONR option as it is the cheapest "10G capable wireless router" here in Singapore. But it is good to offer ONT option for those who prefer to use ONT and their own router.

actually why ppl avoiding nokia ONR bundle from StarHub? One may need to fork out at least $300 (single) ~ $500 (mesh) to get equivalent setup (eg 2.5gbps router will be a waste on the plan, hence you needed device with dual 10g wan/lan at least)

It is here. Take note the link says only for new customers. Quite a few users (eg: from M1) have reported the success to sign up for this plan. For Starhub users, not so sure if any one (targeted user) has got this offer.

There is another link for ONT but no details. No confirmation that this link is valid yet.

Maybe because I am an existing customer. :(
They really dont want to retain customers ah. Haha.

When you click the link, does it pop up to ask for your Hub ID? That should still work.

However, as mentioned, they are saying the link is only for new customers. My friend (existing Starhub 1Gbps customer) checked with Starhub Jurong Point shop a few weeks ago and he could not get the offer either.

Because we never know how locked down the ONR will be. Some may just lock out vlan and port forwarding, the worst ones won't allow simple thing like changing SSID and channel.

And usually they only have decent hardware at best as the goal is to make them as cheap as possible with acceptable performance.

The good way to put it is that ISP manages your bb and WiFi for you. The bad way is you are at the mercy of ISP.

I can see some good use case of ONR (like non tech savvy people with no access to support, or small business with no knowledge to maintain a network), but for the majority we should not be so reliant on the ISP. They are a business after all, they will always want to squeeze more money out of you when you want to have better of anything without fully understanding your actual need.

because I thought most ppl are cost driven (primary factor when choosing a bb plan), as $20/mth subscription plan translates to ~$500 over 2years, and have to consider the cost of router + mesh

But a decent router can last though 3 or more recontract. You can see it as paying to free yourself from the grasp of the ISPs.

I had a Asus RT-AC68U and it died after 10 years of service. I am expecting the replacement, a GT-AX6000 to last for at least 5 years.

Updates on my case:
I called Starhub sales line 1630: After verification, sales representative checked the 5Gbps $29.55 offering and mentioned it is ONR, I told him the contract is ONT, he checked again and tell me I need to pay the $45 or $58 to change to ONT. And he need to cancel the old contract and sign a new one which takes time with new NLT and installation appointment. I insist on signing the contract with ONT at $29.55. He forwarded me to Tech line (I believe it is 1633)
Tech representative after verification again mentioned it is ONT. I was happy for awhile and ask him to confirm, don't want to be disappointed on the appointment day. He checked again and mentioned it is ONR, gave him some "constructive comments" on how bad is their ONR router, my contract signed clearly state ONT and I only sign because of ONT not ONR. He said he will escalate and call back.
Today Starhub Tech call back and asking me " you are escalating to change your contract from ONT-> ONR?" need to give some "constructive comments" again. The objective is clear that ONT with $29.55 and dont want their crap ONR as I will connect it straight to my Unifi SE. She confirmed it is ONT and all is good for the upcoming appointment.
So fingers cross and will update again.

He is the one who found the following link (by changing the "onr" in the mentioned special ONR 5Gbps offer URL to "ont"). Let's see if Starhub keeps the following link and honor the link on its website.

You can see there are no details in the link and no terms and conditions, no mentioning of for new users only either, unlike the special Starhub 5Gbps offer with ONR link.

I already installed the ONR but would like to ask for my own understanding..for ONT, if u want wifi, u need to get a separate router/WAP right? whereas the ONR already has wifi function built in, hence, WAP is optional?

because currently, I'm only using the ONR unit for the whole house (~1,000 sq ft). Starhub technician said coverage is sufficient, so the NOKIA beacon 2 router is not switched on but he set it up as WAP anyway.

Yes, if you opt for the ONT option, you have to get a wireless router by yourself.

The Nokia ONR is the cheapest option for 5Gbps/10Gbps plan to get the user started since it has the wireless function built-in.

If you do not have issues with Nokia ONR, just stick with it.

ONT vs ONR
ONT (or Brided ONR) --> you have all the freedoms to use your own router to its best ability

ONR (unbridged ONR) --> ISPs got the power to control your home network. Simple features. It may be cheaper for the ISP as well. For the user, the main benefit is probably to be able to save one router in the DB box.

More info about ONT (or bridged ONR) versus ONR.
Majority of the average users will usually be fine with ONR. The problem is that sometimes you do not know it is causing problems for you or not (eg: port forwarding). Power users will avoid ONR in general.

I am stuck with Singtel ZTE F8648P ONR myself now since Singtel made some changes to make the manual bridging method no longer working. I have to use different work-arounds to get around some of the limitations but not all. Anyway, I am getting used to the ONR myself with the work-arounds even though I lost some useful feautes previously using Singtel ONT.
