6 Months with StashAway

Did a review for StashAway, the returns have been pretty solid so far. I have been vested in StashAway since Aug 19.

For people that decide to join the platform, here my promo code and you will have up to $10,000 SGD of assets managed for free for 6 months. :s12::s12:

Since sgd has weakened against usd, is it advisable not to add in more funds in stashaway temporary?

It depends on how you look at things. If you expect usd to strengthen even further, then it makes sense to go in now.

Personally, what I did is that I transferred some money from my USD-denominated portfolio into my SGD-Denominated income portfolio, so I don't contribute out of pocket this month for my income portfolio. That way, I'll realise the 2% forex gain since I'm converting some usd holdings into sgd. But that's because I have a considerable amount in stashaway in a portfolio I label as Temporary that I will eventually fully draw down in a couple months time to repay some debt. That way, I borrow against my saved money in my Temporary to offset out of pocket investments for this month and the next.

Does it make sense to you? That way, regardless of how stocks move, I would gain a solid 2% from forex alone. I already did it once in start of Feb.

Thks for ur explanation man. So does it makes sense to add in more funds to SGD portfolio (eg reits) using SGD as well?

You can. The income portfolio is doing surprisingly well this week. However, given how the SG ETFs move, its tough to predict if this is short lived or not.

Personally, if you're doing a monthly contribution type of thing like me, then maybe increase contribution into the Income portfolio now, and reduce the contribution into USD portfolios. Then do the reverse when things settle down already, in the next couple months. Cause the usd will definitely weaken to 'normal' levels once this covid 19 thing pass.

You can also look into Syfe's SGD portfolio. It's called REIT+. It's relatively riskier compared to Stashaway one, but returns are better. You can consider focusing your monthly contribution into those 2 SGD portfolios for the time being then. They also just released the app on Android I think.

any difference between stashaway & stashaway simple ?

Stashaway Simple is just a type of portfolio with the lowest return on Stashaway, albeit the 'safest'. They created Simple to boost their overall AUM, by trying to attract Fixed Deposit people, since it offers slightly lower returns, but there's no minimum sum or lockup period.

There's very little point to Simple, except maybe for like travel funds (i.e. if you keep a couple hundred each month for year-end travel). Might as well put in Simple than just leave it in your bank. <- that's essentially their argument for creating Simple.

I personally don't bother with Simple, since the deposits and withdrawals will ruin my graph on Stashaway, and I don't like the bumps up and down. It's not aesthetically pleasing for me.

Why do you think Syfe REIT+ portfolio is relatively riskier compared to Stashaway?

Syfe's REIT+ has 77% in REITs, with 23% in Bonds. Stashaway has only 35% in REIT, and 54% in Bonds, with 10% STI ETF.

Syfe "bonds" is A35, essentially Singapore sovereign bonds rated AAA. I think StashAway "bonds" include junk bonds.

anyone know if we transfer fund from one portfolio to another portfolio involved currency exchange? mean that StashAway will convert the amount to SGD first then proceed to the purchase in USD?

If you're transferring from one USD-denominated portfolio to another (i.e any portfolio EXCEPT the Income portfolio), they'll just sell off, transfer the USD to the new portfolio and then buy back.

I tried it before.

Thanks. I just done with the transfer. It stated will take 1~3 business days for the process to complete.
Yeah, they'll sell your portfolio tonight, Monday night (SG time), when markets open, and then transfer the USD on Tuesday morning, and buy on Tuesday night. You'll see it reflected in your Transactions page on Wednesday morning (around 8am or something).
