Asia’s worst stock market last year is now one of the region’s top performers

https://www.cnbc.com/2021/03/31/investing-singapores-stock-market-is-one-of-asias-top-performer.html

The article confuses me a little. Trying to read between the lines here, and to also check Taiex's performance that was mentioned. Following are the key ideas:

The benchmark Straits Times Index ended 2020 as the worst performer in Asia, losing 11.8% through the year. But the STI climbed around 12.2% so far this year, and has become one of the region’s top performers.

Taiwan was Asia’s best-performing stock market as of Tuesday. The benchmark Taiwan Stock Exchange Capitalization Weighted Stock Index, or Taiex, slightly edged out the Singapore index with a 12.4% gain this year.

Markets or stocks that are “cyclical” rise and fall in conjunction with fluctuations of the economy. The STI is made up of a high proportion of financial and industrial stocks typically considered as cyclical.

Unlike Singapore, Taiwan’s stock market has a “high proportion of growth stocks,” French investment bank Natixis said in a report earlier this month.

moral of the story, worst or best is meaningless.
wind water rotates

Until now still have not recovered. But slowly getting there. So not sure what with the "best performer"? Hehe my wired logic.

Perhaps Is like if you insist for a certain period of time this index is bad and I can say another period time the same index is the best. 公说公有理。 So got serve simi purpose at the end of the day?

If you buy anything at or near the bottom, every stock is a good stock (based on what I'm hearing here)..

If you DCA though, dyodd. The article shared above was a good reference, comparing Taiex and STI. By the way, without crunching the numbers, falling 11.8% from a 2019 high may not be offset by a subsequent 12.2% gain from a 2020 low.

An index good or bad, my noob view is to see the max time frame. If the index is good, the overall trend should be an up one. STI may not be best, but somehow I feel it's long term not so bright. I'll try to average down my ES3 and decrease my holdings.

Mine is only around 13% - Well Done

like you discussed before, have to look at absolute return too.

During last GFC, I was scared to average up so my average buying price is low and % return is high. But I didn't maximise the $ return.

This time round, I averaged down once STI dropped below 3,000. But after it was clear STI was heading back towards 3,000, i started averaging up starting at $2.80 range as long as STI was below 3,000. This lowered my % return but increased my $ return 💲💲💲
