Singapore Overtakes Thailand to Become Asia’s Worst Stock Market

https://finance.yahoo.com/news/singapore-overtakes-thailand-become-asia-082006110.html

Singapore is a rubbish exchange. Not sure why many insist on investing so much in STI? I understand 10-20 years ago where people can only invest in STI because other market not accessible. With the power of new stockbrokers with 0 or low commission, you have more choices. Dollar cost average is good but STI etf return is negative over last 10 years whereas S&P500 is up so much.

Unless die die iron teeth want to go against the tide? Even big companies like Razer also list in HK. What does this show? Our big caps cannot compete with overseas competitors la. In Singapore say till got dragon got tiger. Go overseas only get trash left right centre. Now only rely on the 3 banks to tong.

Sats u want? SIA u want? Sgx u want? Keppel? SingTel? If it was US or HK, already kick these underperformers out of the index already. Not say STI etf totally cannot but the risk of going down is more run up. Unless u don’t mind the dividend and want to save on the currency exchange

skls5

sounds familiar? does is sound like anyone who tried to talk u out of investing in STI?

moral of story:
1) DCA
2) diversify
3) dun simply listen to other ppl. they likely hav ulterior motives

ups again. dyodd

hmmm... not sure if i am missing something here.
opponents of STI say STI no tech stocks, no global stocks, not diversify. keep on saying S&P500 good S&P500 together.

if frm 2011 till now using some developed markets ETFs, (becoz dis is as far back as they hav data)
nasdaq is best performer (>300%)
japan with all its global manufacturers (125%)
china and HK big economy big tech (38% and 4%)
isreal with all its medical and tech innovative co (-7%)
london established co, diversified (-8%)

no doubt sti is worst performer (-20%)

my point is be careful when someone try to sell u s&p fund or for dat matter, any fund. u dunno wht benefits they may be getting.

interestingly if go back 10 yrs, gold will be the best performer (>200%).
so0zp

will the same ppl sell u gold fund 10yrs ago?

Great report. For me, I ask myself these question:

(1) S&P500 can beat Berkshire Hathaway on some occasions, can STI index do it?
(2) I don’t think STI has a lack of tech companies etc...I would say it has a lack of quality and innovative companies. Which means for every SPH; Semb Corp that is not doing well, there is a lack of company to replace it on the index
(3) Tech stocks are not appreciated her. Imagine if Apple, Facebook, Tesla, Square are listed here, I guess ppl will find them overvalue, no intrinsic value; too high PE etc...some may say Keppel, Sembcorp, Reits got physical assets etc....

Well, you have to make your own decision,

some STI fav at start of year when ETF was $3.2, however many of them are not fav anymore and breaking new lows.
1. singtel
2. banks
3. comfort
4. SIA and SATS

STI a follower to major indexes (go down together when bearish but dont go up much when bull) rather than a leader, 2 dollar is not impossible.
I also think not much recovery for sti due to lack of innovation and disruption in the various industries.

my point is not STI good or no good, is not whether S&P500 good or no good.
my point is simply dyodd. dun jump here jump there when ppl tell u dis good dat no good. when ppl are aggressively selling one thing, juz take caution wht motive they may hav. be it stocks, etf, property ("buy multiple property with no money down"), unit trusts, insurance, trading courses, ecomm courses, motivational talks.........

case in point, 10 yrs ago evyone say ILP good, now evybody pui chao nua.

Well said.

If something is good and can make money, would one go around telling the whole world?

Actually yes.

In a way if you can encourage more people to buy a stock, the demand for it will increase and hence price increase then u sell before price tanks.

Actually MLM also same thing.

U make money by having more people onboard

The person who tells is making use of the others to make money. So in the end, it becomes true... but for him only.

Thanks for the charts and comments.

Just want to feedback regarding the use of the "camera/snap" button in investing.com charts. When you have more than 1 instrument in the chart, it does not display the colour next to the instrument name. So, we have no idea what each line represents.

For multi-instrument charts, maybe it's good to just take a screenshot (and crop it) instead, to preserve the line colour info.

Btw, I use investing.com charts frequently too. :)
