the rich will stay with STI
only the poor try their luck in other market
Hmm....

Some filthy rich don't even own shares.
They are rich with lots of properties and by doing businesses.

This covid has definitely attracted a new breed of young retail stock investors/speculators (as young as 12yo using parent's seed money)

We can see it in animal threads like Tiger app / Tiger Moo thread.
Open ang pow / harassing the friendly and very patient CS / worried the few cents / dollar loss in exchange rate conversion .

And one put up a new thread for in contactable CS . :o

And some adventurous veterans got BANGed , holding some Gucci bags .

Hmm....

if you are not interested to invest in sti... where bother involving yourself here.......it is for sure not the best performing holding. but from my pov, it is where many begineers do their first step and start their investing journey with.

Simple, to help others move on from their first step asap, or even consider taking a different first step. Though feels like a lost cause sometimes.. with ppl straight coming in asking to hear the good things only.

It's like going into first reit thread and only being allowed to sing its praises

To be fair, there's a good number of those defending sti, sounding like a broken record as well. It's always about:

1. Home ground advantage - besides maybe the opportunity to see with our own eyes how retail is performing, what advantage are we referring to?

2. Defensive play - is it actually less vulnerable than other ETFs? Is it sufficiently diversified?

3. All about the entry price - this applies to anything and everything else. If there was a chance to enter sti at a good price, likely it was a similar opportune moment to enter something else. So this point is really irrelevant, more used as a personal attack on others, or as a consolation to self that it's money well invested.

What will be the different 1st step that yield better returns and similar stability? Willing to listen!

STI got stable meh? STI got returns meh?

Ok la, stably flat maybe have.

Maybe go IWDA or VWRA as a 1st step?
If the US/world tanks, SG won't be spared 1.

Interested to listen to your views about STI's yield and stability too, as to why you may feel it is high/decent yielding and stable.

One related article to read: https://dollarsandsense.sg/singaporeans-perform-poorly-investing-stock-market/

Actually no need for me to share, definitely not an expert like many others here. You can just look in the other threads for advice. I'm not advocating stock picking, but if looking only at ETFs there are definitely other options besides sti.

Agree. These days it's so bad that other Asian markets can go green, yet sti stays red. That's despite a budget deficit and a relatively well-controlled covid situation. Any news of increased community spread (touch wood), I think sti will tank again.

Yea for this observation I am actually worried for the SG economy as a whole. We are arguably one of the world's best countries in controlling COVID, but that translated almost nothing into powering our economy ahead. Stock market is in the doldrums, a big hole has appeared in our reserves, and everyone is still living on an edge.

We do well to handle problems, but it does not at least translate to reversal of losses from the initiation of the problems. But once new problems arise, we take a hard hit again. If this is indeed happening, the question will be, how many more hits can we take before we totally crumble?
