I do not think it is a good idea to remove any particular users access to any features. It's akin to some middle eastern countries where thieves get their hands chopped off; Sure it removes the problem, but is it really the best solution?
I think it sets a dangerous precedence. Today you remove one user's ability to react to posts, tomorrow are you going to remove another user's ability to post smilies? :s12::s12::s12:.

If someone is breaking the rules or causing a nuisance, there is always the good old warn, infract, or ban.

and perhaps the feature itself could be designed in such a way so as to prevent abuse.

I just add those spammers to my ignore list and since then I haven't received any notifications from their "likes". I still get from other users though.

What wrong with taking away that feature from these spammers. Its not chopping off their hands. If you want to use an analogy, its depriving them of their weapons.
There is no such thing as a perfect analogy. But the technicalities of the analogy are not the point of discussion.

Anyway, the advocates for chopping of hands as punishment probably use depriving of weapons as an analogy to support their cause too.

There is no such thing as a perfect analogy, true. But it's a fallacy to treat all analogies as the same. The technicalities do matter.

Sure the technicalities do matter.

But the key is whether or not it is a good fit, at least so much so as to the point that is being made.

And the gist is this: This is a universal feature that everyone has. To deprive some people of the feature is to limit their normal abilities, putting them at a disadvantage compared to the rest of the population.

The fact is that they are going to have to amongst a population where they are less able than everyone else.

So I don't think I had wrongly applied my analogy, the key elements are what it is.

Sure. So banning is better? Its one of the existing methods which u had listed and asked why it cannot be used.

Going by this line of argument on the deprivation of abilities, banning is a greater disadvantage. If so, why did u even list it in the first place?

Anyway, I beg to differ. Taking away certain functionalities is a good thing, especially to people who are inclined to abuse it.

I'm compelled to turn all notifications for my account, can't stand all these harrassments
can you elaborate why are you "compelled" to turn on all notifications for your account? will something terrible happen if you turn it off?
